"The 16th novel by #1 bestselling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of Light On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand's godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man's life. When a strange key is found in Stephen's possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d'Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand's godfather has kept for decades. A gruesome discovery in Stephen's Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized. Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family. For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide"-- Provided by publisher.

Gamache in Paris
submitted by camelsamba on July 2, 2021, 9:38pm
In this book, the action primarily takes place in France. And here's a lot more action than a typical Three Pines tale! Along the way, we learn a lot about Armand's childhood (or at least the parts of it spent in Paris), and his relationship to his godfather Stephen. I'm a bit disturbed about the instrumentalization of Jean-Guy, but I suppose I've gotten used to that sort of thing happening in this series.
"But it was compassionate to spare them. Life can be cruel, as you know. But it can also be kind, filled with wonders. You need to remember that. You have your own choice to make, Armand. What are you going to focus on? What's unfair, or, all the wonderful things that happen. Both are true. Both are real. Both need to be accepted. But which carries more weight with you?" Stephen tapped the boy's chest. "The terrible, or the wonderful? The goodness, or the cruelty? Your life will be decided by that choice." (Armand and Stephen discussing the Burghers of Calais; ~14 minutes in)

If you've ever been to Paris, this book will create a longing to return. I love how Louise Penny buries profound nuggets of truth about life in her engaging stories...portraying relationships with warmth and complexity, and keeping you guessing until the end. Another winner!
