"A tense, page-turning psychological drama about the making and breaking of a family, about a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for--and everything she feared. Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting, supportive mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood's exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter--Violet rejects her mother, screams uncontrollably, and becomes a disturbing, disruptive presence at her preschool. Or is it all in Blythe's head? Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining things. What he sees is an overwhelmed wife who can't cope with the day-to-day grind. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well. Then their son Sam is born--and with him, Blythe has the natural, blissful connection she'd always imagined with her child. Even Violet seems to love her little brother. But when life as they know it is changed in an instant, the devastating fall-out forces Blythe to face the truth. Here, we see the making and breaking of a family in crystalline detail, and what it feels like when women are not believed. The Push is a tour de force you will read in a sitting, an utterly immersive pageturner that will challenge everything you think you know about motherhood, about our children, and about what happens behind the doors of even the most perfect-looking families. . Not worth the time submitted by kath on August 21, 2021, 11:48am I can't believe I actually read this book when there are so many great books. So much angst and terrible parenting. It is a predicable sort of romance novel with a bad ending. All the characters are unlikable. The plot - such that it is - is just vapid.

I couldn't put it down! submitted by gtaylor on July 13, 2022, 11:49am The beginning didn't immediately capture me, but the last ~150 pages had me obsessed! This book is not for everybody. It is hard to read--heartbreaking, and filled with triggers. It messed with me psychologically and will stay with me for a while. Overall though, it was a captivating read.

Dark, interesting submitted by lbflute on June 10, 2023, 3:02pm I appreciated the style of the novel, switching between a few of the main characters and time periods and eventually tying those characters together. It captured my attention and was easy to keep reading. It highlighted dysfunctional family relationships, inter-generational trauma, and mental illness. The book challenged traditional gender roles and hinted that not all women are destined to be good mothers.

Worth the read submitted by csmit300 on July 12, 2023, 3:01pm I agree with other reviewers, the change in narrators was hard to follow at times. The chaotic point of view did make sense for the character but was difficult to read. I appreciated how plots wove through the story without being shoved at you. The story also highlighted generational trauma. I cried a lot reading this book, especially as a mother myself.
