Azul is a tile-placement game in which players compete for the highest score by claiming tiles and arranging them on their board to score points. Extra points are on offer for collecting sets of the same colour of tile, or for creating particular patterns, while there are penalties for taking tiles that you're unable to use. But every tile that you claim affects what your rivals can take next. You'll have to make choices that help you without helping them too much.
Players: 2-4
Age Range: 8+
Play Time: 30-45 minutes

Rules may be complicated but once playing it'll be easier submitted by Baradlay on January 5, 2021, 10:34pm Browse some videos about how to play online. This is one of the best board games I've played. Quite a strategy game!

beautiful and fun submitted by 21621032124198 on February 6, 2022, 1:18pm We very much enjoyed this game. The tiles are beautiful and you try out lots of different strategies to score. The parents enjoyed the game more than the kids.

Worked well for our family submitted by bfields on February 27, 2022, 11:39am We (two adults and a fifth grader) played this several times. Rules are very clear and don't take too long to pick up, and we didn't need to refer to them again after the first time. We all had fun, and were still interested after multiple games.

Little bumpy learning but easy and fun submitted by mgabbieb on June 10, 2022, 3:08pm The instructions are a little hard to understand at first, but after playing a round it gets much easier. The actual gameplay is pretty simple as well. The games are relatively quick and satisfying. Played with two players.

Azul submitted by russelan on June 21, 2022, 9:59pm Simple and beautiful game. I've really enjoyed this one.

It Took A Bit submitted by majean on July 22, 2022, 3:34pm I watched a playthrough on YouTube that really helped me understand. Nice game!

Azul submitted by downing on August 7, 2022, 1:09pm Azul was fine

Love this game submitted by JennJenn on August 11, 2022, 2:51pm It takes just enough strategy to be fun but is also pretty as you build.

Beautiful puzzle submitted by giffinka on August 26, 2022, 2:25pm This was a very fun puzzle game. The strategy takes a while to pick up on and it was a good challenge. This works well as a two player game. I think my favorite part was the tiles. They are gorgeous and had a very pleasing shape that was fun to move around the board.

Tactile and Enjoyable! submitted by emjane on June 20, 2023, 12:55pm If you choose your board games based on lovely visual patterns and tactilely satisfying pieces, Azul is for you! Luckily, if you choose your games based on the fun of gameplay and ease to learn, Azul is ALSO for you! Basically, this tile collecting game is one I can recommend to anyone. The rules are simple enough, but the opportunities to strategize (and then have those strategies thwarted by your opponent) are bountiful. Azul is a bit more fun when you play with the full four players, but the game is plenty enjoyable with two, and it’s easier to get a handle on the strategies when playing as a duo.

Satisfying puzzle game submitted by samuelbs on July 11, 2023, 2:01pm 2-4 Players. A good abstract game: simple, fast, and fun. The main mechanic is tile drafting in order to build your mosaic. It is a compelling and satisfying little spatial puzzle.

Beautiful tile-placement game submitted by SHamadaAADL on August 15, 2023, 1:58pm This game needs a strategy and luck to complete your board.

Beautiful, easy game submitted by jrpolaczyk on July 1, 2024, 6:28am Not a tough game to learn, but many outcomes and ways to play. One of my favorite games to play with adults.

Quick Fun Game submitted by berger_d on July 8, 2024, 9:37am Azul is a really quick, fun game. It's really well designed, nice tactile sense to the pieces. The rules and game mechanics are pretty easy to learn (my 8 and 10 year old kids had no problem learning it), but it's set up so that while the goal is always the same, the game play creates enough variation that you need to keep puzzling out the next best move. Recommended highly.

Fun and pretty submitted by shosh.lenski on July 10, 2024, 8:51pm Our family loves this game. Not only fun to play and relatively easy to learn, but such a beautiful board, too!

5/5 submitted by kmp009 on July 28, 2024, 3:05pm A fun easy game to learn, but it still requires some skill. It is also pretty to look at it

Fun submitted by sdeochen on July 29, 2024, 4:26pm It was confusing at first

Fun game, easy to learn submitted by asjackson on July 31, 2024, 8:19am This is an easy game for adults to learn. (It may take a few plays for kids.) It’s complex enough to need a bit of strategy but is not too involved. Each player is working on their own tiling board and competing for points.

Easy and fun submitted by ea9nr269 on June 11, 2025, 10:28am The game is very fun and easy to pick up for any skill level of player!

Excellent! submitted by jjroetman on July 12, 2025, 11:41pm One of my favorite games! Very easy to learn and teach to new players - highly recommend.

New and unique game style submitted by bknopf on July 14, 2025, 6:36pm This is a fun and exciting game to learn because it requires both strategy and luck when collecting tiles. A lot of what you do is based on other players moves. It may take a play or two to fully grasp the rules due to the unique game play. However, once you learn your strategy, you won't want to stop!

Beautiful and fun! submitted by kaleidoscopic_roses on July 16, 2025, 5:33pm This is such a fun and pleasantly designed game. Definitely a favorite that my friends and I like to return to. Even my family members, who aren't huge board game people, love it!

Fun game! submitted by SusanS on July 23, 2025, 8:54am This is a really fun game. We played with four adults, and the rules became clear as we played the first game. After that, we started figuring out the strategies for winning. We played several times, and it was fun every time. There is also an "alternate game board" on the other side of the player boards, where the rules are slightly different. That gave our brains another workout! Highly recommend.

Easy and fun! submitted by wguo on August 5, 2025, 10:42pm This is a fun and pretty game. It's easy to learn and the game mechanic is simple.

Artfully embellish the walls of your palace by drafting the most beautiful tiles. submitted by klaw197 on August 18, 2025, 1:31pm One of my favorite introduction games to tile placement and abstract gaming. It is simple to teach and usually gets new people playing in a few minutes.

For more information, here's the info from BGG
"Introduced by the Moors, azulejos (originally white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully embraced by the Portuguese when their king Manuel I, on a visit to the Alhambra palace in Southern Spain, was mesmerized by the stunning beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The king, awestruck by the interior beauty of the Alhambra, immediately ordered that his own palace in Portugal be decorated with similar wall tiles. As a tile-laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora.

In the game Azul, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they've placed their tiles to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets; wasted supplies harm the player's score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins. "
