In CATAN (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players build by spending resources (sheep, wheat, wood, brick and ore) that are depicted by these resource cards; each land type, with the exception of the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource: hills produce brick, forests produce wood, mountains produce ore, fields produce wheat, and pastures produce sheep.

Classic but slow submitted by mowjac on April 16, 2021, 5:24pm This is THE game that opened the pathway for resource acquisition games. It takes a bit of attention to get into play, but once you get the hang of it, you are good to go. Balancing the resources takes skill and the dice keep adding an element of randomness that can be exciting or frustrating. I would recommend this to people who have played American boardgames and want to dip their toe into European style games (although I think Ticket to Ride is the best Euro-entry game out there).

5/5 submitted by Morgsush on June 16, 2022, 2:19am classic resource acquisition game. easy enough to understand for newcomers, with plenty of chance & metas to keep it interesting.

Fun Acquisition Game submitted by choichr on June 23, 2022, 10:29am Catan is a fun acquisition game to play with family and friends. It's easy to set up, but you'll need a flat surface and ample space. There are many small pieces. There are multiple components to the game which can be overwhelming for a first time player, but it will all make sense as you play the game. There is a bit of luck to the game, but winning will depend on strategy.

SO SO FUN submitted by stellafio on July 11, 2022, 3:25pm Such a good game, great for small groups. Even without any war elements it gets super competitive

Great game for 4 people submitted by zshahid19 on July 17, 2022, 2:38pm This game is a fun game for 4 people. For 3 people its okay but it really shines for 4 people. Would definitely recommend checking it out

THE Game submitted by valerieclaires on July 26, 2022, 11:53am A real gateway game to the world of board gaming, Catan was the game that made me and so many others into board game people. The basics of the game are simple to learn, but the randomization of resources and ports means it doesn't get stale. The location of resources and the roll number associated with them changes with every game, and you can even use tokens to cover over the trade ports for more customization. All around a great game for casual or serious board gamers, and one of my very favorites!

not a fan submitted by Aimless on August 2, 2022, 9:13am why do people love Catan? I have no idea. so many more games with better mechanics

Can win with a variety of strategies submitted by JennJenn on August 11, 2022, 3:00pm I love this game as their are so many ways to approach it and you can win with a variety of different strategies.

Modern Classic; May be Overrated submitted by samuelbs on July 15, 2023, 3:24pm 3–4 Players. Classic Euro-style game that introduced many people to modern board games. It's a good social game, but can be a bit too luck dependent. Initial placement is key. In some plays, you may realize you are stuck while the rest of the players continue to acquire resources.
