Comic unevenness submitted by mowjac on May 4, 2021, 12:42pm This debut novel strides along like a peg-legged pirate: one smooth--the male protagonist's story--and one clunky--the female protagonist's story. Every bad thing that could happen to a woman happens to Safwa, who never becomes a full fleshed character. Anwar, the male lead, is transparently the author, his humorous voice is the best part, carrying me along farther than I would have read otherwise.
Not what I'd hoped submitted by ValerieL on June 24, 2022, 5:27pm I wanted very badly to like this book. I picked it up because it sounded interesting and this year, I'm trying to make a concentrated effort to read books by people who have a different race, ethnic group, or religion than I do. Unfortunately, the book fell short for me. Safwa/Azza just never becomes the character you know she could be. Anvar is funny and irreverent, but somehow also falls short. I feel like this book needed to go through more editing to bring it up to the book I wanted it to be. Still, with the differing viewpoints from my own, I'm glad I read it.
