Includes foreword by Frankie Vegas and an afterword by Christian Staebler.
Includes an interview with Pet Vegas (pages 153-155).
"Brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas were talented Native American rock musicians that took the 1960s Sunset Strip by storm. They influenced The Doors and jammed with Jimmy Hendrix before he was 'Jimi', and the idea of a band made up of all Native Americans soon followed. Determined to control their creative vision and maintain their cultural identity, they eventually signed a deal with Epic Records in 1969. But as the American Indian Movement gained momentum the band took a stand, choosing pride in their ancestry over continued commercial reward. Created in cooperation with the Vegas family, authors Christian Staebler and Sonia Paoloni with artist Thibault Balahy take painstaking steps to ensure the historical accuracy of this important and often overlooked story of America's past. Part biography and part research journalism, Redbone provides a voice to a people long neglected in American history."--Provided by publisher.

Enjoyable Read submitted by samanthar on February 17, 2021, 11:15am This was an interesting read! As a fan of the music, it was fun to see where the band's path crossed with other great musicians of the era, like Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. The story went beyond rock and roll, and gave some information on American Indian boarding schools (forced assimilation), the American Indian Movement (AIM), and Wounded Knee Occupation, among others. The negatives are the art style was hard to follow. There were no panel separations, and dialog would flow into each other with no clear direction, making the reading confusing. That aside, it was enjoyable and I appreciated reading about an often overlooked area of American music history and Native American contribution to American pop culture.
