Apple Records -- The red album -- Dog Street. Side A ; Side B -- Get back -- Liner notes.
"The term "Apple" is a slur in Native communities across the country. It's for someone supposedly "red on the outside, white on the inside." Eric Gansworth is telling his story in Apple (Skin to the Core). The story of his family, of Onondaga among Tuscaroras, of Native folks everywhere. From the horrible legacy of the government boarding schools, to a boy watching his siblings leave and return and leave again, to a young man fighting to be an artist who balances multiple worlds. Eric shatters that slur and reclaims it in verse and prose and imagery that truly lives up to the word heartbreaking." -- Inside front jacket flap.

Great submitted by manz on February 2, 2022, 2:54pm This is a great read! A memoir in verse, it explores the author's life, growing up on the reservation, his family history, coming of age, moving away, his cultural identity, and includes so many pop culture references from the 60s-70s, particularly The Beatles. It's a different way to explore and learn about a Native American experience in the United States. I think it would be more enjoyed by adults than teens. I read a lot of YA, and this book is not inappropriate in any way, but would be a better sell to adults than teens, IMHO.
