"From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer"-- Provided by publisher.
Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. He loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, When Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of "Guncle Rules" Patrick has no idea what to expect. After years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled acting career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old, Patrick's eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility. Even being larger than life means you're unfailingly human. -- adapted from jacket

Great book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I laughed, I cried, I rooted for GUP and the kiddos. It was definitely a little more intense than I thought it'd be, but it was so good and well-written that I didn't mind the intensity. A great book and highly recommended!
The storyline took hold and I was hooked

I kept picturing Robin Williams in _The Birdcage_, then sprinkled in grieving children.
It took me a hot second to get into this book, but I think only because I deeply don’t understand our cultural obsession with celebrity. Once I wrapped my head around a Golden Globe being the be-all-and-end-all of someone’s life, the storyline took hold and I was hooked. Patrick, Maisie, and Grant are wonderful, and the growing relationship between the three is natural, funny, challenging, and just plain fun to read. Everybody grows in this story. That doesn’t mean it isn’t sometimes painful, but it’s surrounded by love, and isn’t that life?
Like a mug of hot chocolate for my little gay heart submitted by gtaylor on July 12, 2022, 4:50pm It's a book you can cozy into with lovable characters, a story arc filled with growth, and the perfect amount of humor. And it's another story we can add to the stack of LGBTQ+ tales that don't end in tragedy!! This book is a wonderful mix of pain, redemption, and love. 5 stars!

Fun Story with some Heart submitted by cldaniels on June 9, 2023, 11:37am I enjoyed both the humor of the main character, and the emotion of his back story. Wonderful book, " not too heavy, not too sweet."
