Vern escapes the religious compound where she was raised and gives birth to twins in the forest, raising them away from the influence of the outside world. Her community won't let her go that easily, however, and as they pursue, she breaks the boundaries of humanity, changing her body in uncanny ways in order to protect her family.

Dark, but good submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 18, 2021, 10:38pm Rivers Solomon writes really dark stories. This novel is a combination of Black Panthers (the ‘60’s Black Power group) plus cult plus Tuskeegee experiment in a dark DC/Marvel-ish storyline. But if you’re willing to peer in, it’s good. Solomon is an outstanding writer and if you can look into the darkest parts of the human soul, they’re an outstanding storyteller and you won’t be disappointed.
