Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientèle. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary's fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries. Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary's in a stunning twist of fate, and not everyone will survive.

Solid Summer Read submitted by avalade on July 21, 2021, 8:34am If your looking for an escape, this is the story for you! The plot is fairly predictable but there are a few good twists. The characters and settings are well done.

Unique, fun read submitted by scarrieliz on June 17, 2022, 11:45am This was a dual timeline narrative, with one part of the story in present day London, and one in London of the 1700’s.

My hunger to read returned after finishing this book! submitted by MadPiggy on June 27, 2022, 6:43pm
This is a good book to pick up if you're getting out of a reading slump, or want to sustain your reading habit. That's what this book did for me - it's the first fiction I've read in a while, and it was captivating enough to take me through its complete journey, making me want to go back for "what happened next?" daily. I really liked the parallel timelines and perspectives, and how Sarah wove those components together - it was fun to piece the story together with the characters themselves. She set the scenes well, and the story had an eerie, historical air around it throughout. At points though, I did think her lexicon or tone was very casual - something even I could have written. But for the most part, I enjoyed the telling and thought it was a good mystery/thriller to read, and explored the themes of self, friendship and loyalty nicely. Would definitely recommend for a one-time read.
