"From the indie rockstar of Japanese Breakfast fame, and author of the viral 2018 New Yorker essay that shares the title of this book, an unflinching, powerful memoir about growing up Korean-American, losing her mother, and forging her own identity. In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian-American kid at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence (; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the east coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her. Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Michelle Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread"-- Provided by publisher.

Crying in H Mart submitted by nemiller on July 27, 2021, 10:04am A beautiful and moving memoir about grief, (mixed) identity, and celebration versus assimilation, especially as explored through language and food.

After reading this memoir, I now want to check out the author's band, Japanese Breakfast.

So Sad! submitted by gracekil on August 18, 2021, 2:40pm Omg it's so sad! She is a great writer and tells an interesting story.

One of my favorite books of the year submitted by bcartm01 on June 17, 2022, 11:10pm This was an epic story about a mother and daughter. I was crying at several points. I also wish that I lived closer to a H-Mart after reading about how her culture’s food played such a central role in she and her mother’s relationship ship. This is a good one.

wow this book is amazing submitted by dhrustar on June 21, 2022, 4:49pm It's so good, i could read it 50 times

universal themes of love submitted by kath on June 24, 2022, 12:59pm This book is so sad and so familiar. food and family and figuring out who we are. a lot of crying

Beautifully Written submitted by ellec on June 30, 2022, 10:22pm I finished this book today and was struck by the author's way of weaving together food, culture, a complicated mother-daughter relationship, and grief. It was a wonderful read.

cry submitted by smr on July 15, 2022, 11:26am craing

excellent book, but not for those with Mom Issues submitted by kh89 on July 18, 2022, 10:33pm I'll be honest: I couldn't finish this book (yet). My elderly mother has recently begun dealing with some severe health issues, and I found myself relating too intensely to many of the author's emotions. It is a testament to Zauner's achingly gorgeous writing that I FELT so deeply her agony over her mother's illness and death. However, I'm going to have to come back to this book later on in my life, as losing one's mother isn't a topic I'm ready to face.

Phenomenal, but difficult to read submitted by ahlalejini on July 19, 2022, 10:22pm Prepare for lots of tears and difficult emotional moments, but it's excellent

Love this submitted by bookasaurusray on July 27, 2022, 11:02am the amount of times i cried is just embarrassing

Heart-wrenching submitted by ctconley on August 11, 2022, 3:19pm Such an honest book. Definitely one I will think about for a while.

Beautiful submitted by leah karr on August 19, 2022, 6:53pm Stay on the waitlist and read this book, it's worth it. Mother-daughter relationship changed right at the time in a daughters life when typically one begins to appreciate their mother so very much.

Captivating and devastating submitted by mgabbieb on June 9, 2023, 11:25am Had to take pauses here and there while reading. An absolutely devastating but beautiful read.

A beautiful memoir submitted by abbysourabby on June 11, 2023, 10:05am A story about a Korean-American woman navigating her relationship with her mother and her Koreanness. Such a beautifully devastating book that is sure to connect with anyone. Would definitely recommend.

10/10 submitted by devivwilson on June 14, 2023, 1:03am Amazing book from Michelle. Emotional and inspiring.

Not the book for me, but very well might be right for you submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 14, 2023, 9:25pm Meh. Here’s the thing, though… memoirs really aren’t my preferred genre, unless they introduce me to or deepen my understanding of a topic that is of high interest to me. This memoir is about family relationships, cancer, and being Korean-American, though that last topic is largely addressed through the author’s relationship to Korean food. I’m not particularly interested in any of those things except learning more about other cultures, but food is one of my least favorite ways in.

Zauner is a good writer, but this wasn’t the book for me.

Lots of feels submitted by qwertyq on July 29, 2023, 10:49am This was a really great book that captured the complexity of family dynamics and the grief that comes with loss and illnesses and caretaking.
