Fantastic historical fiction
submitted by rshah on June 19, 2023, 5:12am
This book won a lot of awards and honors, and for good reason. It is an emotionally affecting read that manages to tackle a number of important issues in a short period of time. Set shortly after the Supreme Court decides Loving vs. Virginia, Ariel learns her 18-year-old sister has fallen in love with an Indian American man. Both Ariel’s Jewish parents and Raj’s Hindu parents want their children to marry within the faith and thus disapprove of the relationship. The disapproval of the relationship is the catalyst for the rest of the book.
What I really loved about this book is that while it is a story of struggle, it is also a story of strength. As the year passes, Ariel discovers she is good at poetry and finds strength in her creative voice. This also leads her to find strength in other ways and that strength becomes the driving force for how the story concludes.
Historical Fiction based on the author's family submitted by liebermanjanice on June 19, 2024, 10:40pm There were lots of interesting issues to explore in this book set in 1967-68: interracial marriage, family dynamics, friendship, dysgraphia, anti-semitism, and more.
