Sob Because It's Bad submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:16pm The album title here feels a bit like a misnomer, as John Mayer draws more from the blues than from rock in any of its incarnations, but the general tone of the music does fit the moniker quite well. Mayer is good at straddling the line between being emotive and pathetic, which works for the lyrical tone of these tracks. However, the repeated use of a mocking grammatical form in “Why You No Love Me” not only sways the song toward unsympathetic pathos, it is actually offensive as it directly and deliberately employs language often weaponized against certain ethnic groups. It’s a shame that this one track leaves such a bad taste, because the remainder of the album is quite good, its stripped-down style allowing the strong songwriting to rise to the foreground. Whether one track outweighs the rest is up to the listener, but it more or less ruined the album for me.
