Had More Potential Than It Realized submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 5:40pm Content Note: The film uses the “r” slur once toward the end, which turned an enjoyably bad film into a grave disappointment for me.
I didn’t expect this film to be particularly good (though it does initially seem like a potential hidden gem given its strong premise and cast), but, alas, its good ideas and decent slate of actors could never outweigh its terrible script and clunky editing. Judy Greer, Melanie Lynskey, and Justin Long do the best with what they are given and produce some excellent laugh-out-loud moments, and the main character’s growth arc nearly comes together in a way that comes naturally (it’s good enough that I would overlook it in a better-made film). However, the film has a level of artifice about it, and all I could really see throughout was how much potential it left on the table. This wasn’t a waste of time, but it was a disappointment despite my measured expectations for it.
