COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Lacks Narrative Flow submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:34pm This biopic features a wonderful performance from Jennifer Hudson as the Queen of Soul, but the film focuses too much on its history and too little on its narrative flow. The storytelling is excellent when it is focused, but the timeline moves forward in a haphazard fashion that dulls its emotional impact; by attempting to show so much of Aretha Franklin’s life, the writers end up showing too little of the woman herself. That said, the film still is a meticulously made period piece that does offer some insight into some of the challenges that Franklin faced in her childhood and even at the height of her fame; troubled relationships with her father and her first husband form the core of the film’s emotional conflict, and provide a through-line for the entire story. The film may not be particularly gripping, but it does offer valuable insight into one of the most influential pop performers of all time.
