COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Loved the premise submitted by jillian on June 12, 2022, 8:56am A great set up, but the script dragged.
Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop submitted by yufamily on June 21, 2022, 4:48pm Kelsey Grammer and Nathalie Cox made a great team! Loved their chemistry.
Let me save you some time submitted by fernzo on June 23, 2022, 11:24pm Kelsey Grammer was wasted. The characters were flat, and predictable as was the resolution. I went in with low and untaxing expectations that were, nonetheless, unmet. There are much better diversions out there.
Disappointed in the lead character submitted by alotofaxolotl on July 4, 2022, 10:07pm I was not surprised and had hoped to be. The worst actor was the main female lead who was picked for looks rather than talent. I wish they had picked someone else for this role. It was interesting enough but I had figured out early on what was going on and wished to be proven wrong. The rest of the cast was strong.
Feels Like a Book Adaptation But Seems Not to Be? submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:31pm I can’t believe that this film isn’t an adaptation of a book, yet no record of such a book exists. The storytelling mood oscillates between a traditional cozy mystery and a domestic thriller, and while the uneven tone does subvert some audience expectations when the plot takes its darker turns, the end result is a film that remains at a certain emotional reserve at its conclusion. The mystery itself unfolds at a decent pace, with a series of clues and a sleuth’s explanation that wouldn’t feel out of place in a mid-tier Golden Age detective novel, but the tension between the film’s two moods is never resolved and it suffers from hovering unconvincingly in the middle. It is far too dark to be a proper cozy, yet its main characters (and the screenwriters) seem to believe that they are in one: Miss Willoughby herself is just a little too perfect, particularly in a film that is willing to go fairly dark, and she lacks the kind of depth you generally expect from a leading character in a standalone film. This isn’t the fault of the actors, though; to the contrary, the film is remarkably well-acted when graded on a curve for its budget and (apparent) ambitions. Ultimately, the film is entertaining enough, but it definitely isn’t what you would expect from seeing the box and the synopsis, and that is its primary problem.
