I, too... submitted by gpapp on July 20, 2022, 4:58pm Ada Limon was named last week as the next US Poet Laureate, and it was one of the best moves the country has made in several years. This latest work continues to give us haunting imagery, decisive and sharp precision, and a refusal to look away when it would be easier.
Essential read submitted by redwood on August 9, 2022, 8:02am I have been a fan of Limon's work for a while, and this is both a continuation and a reinvention of her earlier work. Many of the same images and themes, her ever-present preoccupation with horses and trees. The sharpness of emotion in this collection, though, feels more intense, particularly with respect to grief. The collection is called The Hurting Kind, after all, and the title poem is ringing in me, a masterclass in reckoning with hurt: “I am the hurting kind. I keep searching for proof.”
