April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they cultivated a group of devoted and inseparable friends -- Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily -- during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead. Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Hannah is relieved to have finally put the past behind her, but her world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April's death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide ... including a murder.-- Publisher's description.

Far-fetched murderer submitted by hiker15 on June 24, 2023, 9:55am The premise is that the police arrested the wrong person, who was convicted. Then years later they find out he probably didn't do it. At the end it is revealed who did it and why - - - but you need to suspend your belief that the police are competent because if they were the least bit competent they would have suspected and likely convicted the person who did it. Particularly if the murder occurred when DNA can be used.

Mystery submitted by grimest on July 12, 2023, 4:57pm Enjoyable mystery - easy reading

New Ruth Ware submitted by Gillerdeer on July 13, 2023, 9:10am I've been reading a lot of Ruth Ware's novels in the past year, and I've really enjoyed them. I find that they range from largely forgettable to really thrilling. This one was in the middle, though closer to the 'really thrilling' side. One thing in particular that I liked about it was that I kept thinking "okay, she's trying to trick me into thinking it was X who did it, but obviously that's because Y did it" and then I'd be totally wrong. Basically there are layers of red herrings such that even when you think you have it figured out, something new comes around the corner. The main thing I didn't like about this one was the characters. It's a bit unclear why everyone supposedly loved April in the first place, since she seems pretty entitled and mean. And Hannah is probably a fairly realistic depiction of someone obsessing over whether they led to an innocent man's death, but still, it sometimes came off as a bit much.

Good thriller submitted by klb10 on July 25, 2023, 4:06pm Fast paced page turner, kept me engaged throughout trying to guess who might have done it!

good, not great submitted by apknapp on August 1, 2024, 5:55pm I rated this four stars when I first read it, but have since downgraded its rating to three stars--it was engaging enough at the time, but it just didn't stick with me; there was nothing special about it, so it didn't really implant itself in my brain the way a truly great book does.

Just ok submitted by booksandhibernation on August 17, 2024, 4:27pm There is no context to any of the characters and we are just supposed to accept that everyone loves April and so on. It was hard for me to feel engaged or interested. Even the end was just ok.
