"Set in a Native community in Maine, Night of the Living Rez is a riveting debut collection about what it means to be Penobscot in the twenty-first century and what it means to live, to survive, and to persevere after tragedy. In twelve striking, luminescent stories, author Morgan Talty--with searing humor, abiding compassion, and deep insight--breathes life into tales of family and a community as they struggle with a painful past and an uncertain future. A boy unearths a jar that holds an old curse, which sets into motion his family's unraveling; a man, while trying to swindle some pot from a dealer, discovers a friend passed out in the woods, his hair frozen into the snow; a grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's projects the past onto her grandson; and two friends, inspired by Antiques Roadshow, attempt to rob the tribal museum for valuable root clubs. A collection that examines the consequences and merits of inheritance, Night of the Living Rez is an unforgettable portrayal of an Indigenous community and marks the arrival of a standout talent in contemporary fiction"-- Provided by publisher.

Read this! submitted by zwachtel50 on June 9, 2023, 2:35pm A set of connected short stories, Night of the Living Rez is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Each story can be read alone or in the context of the whole book, and together they tell a heartbreaking but beautiful story of life on the Penobscot Native American reservation. It definitely takes a little concentration to be able to switch between stories because each is set at a slightly different time, and details are left out (on purpose) but this is up there with best books I’ve read this year. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in short stories, contemporary fiction, and/or Native American stories.
A tough, brilliant collection submitted by mlitfin on July 7, 2024, 11:15am The linkages between the stories in this collection are so thoughtful. Talty plays with negative space—silences and gaps—to make quiet, powerful statements about how collective, individual, and societal traumas build and destroy over a lifetime.
Twisty and beautiful submitted by hjuge on August 6, 2024, 3:06pm Beautifully written, Night of the Living Rez is an immersive read. A non-linear collection of separate stories centering the same characters, the book shows rather than tells a family's experience on the Penobscot Reservation in Maine.
