"In the early 1900s, a curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town to study faerie folklore, where she discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love. Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on dryadology, the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encylopedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party--much less get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog Shadow, and the Fair Folk to that of friends or lovers. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hransvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: the dashing and insufferably handsome Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of her research, and utterly confound and frustrate Emily. But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart"-- Provided by publisher.

Early 20th century faerie story with academics! submitted by ajh on June 13, 2024, 4:16pm This was great fun, and I am anticipating the next in the series. Definitely gets the "curmudgeonly professor" in the blurb - but also has academic faerie taxonomy and remote research in the far north of Europe. Which may make it sound boring, but the characters are well-written, and the plot moves right along, in the best way.

Fun low-stakes fantasy submitted by awootton on June 20, 2024, 9:20am I loved this book. It is very fluffy, fun, and exciting and I think it is very uniquely written. Perfect to read on a winters night!!

Cozy academic read submitted by sellis612 on June 25, 2024, 10:31am This would be a great fall/winter read. Within the genre, she did an amazing job of making the story original but somehow familiar. It's great for academics who have a thing for fantasy, you feel like you're learning about the fae yourself as you read. Loved the cozy town but there are some more "stressful" events that happen more near the end which wouldn't necessarily allow this to fit into a "cozy fantasy" in my opinion.

Looking forward to more! submitted by pamhockey25 on July 2, 2024, 9:33am It's 1909, and this book is told from Emily's POV in journal entries. Her research takes her on an adventure in a remote village in Scandinavia where she's investigating the faeries in this inhospitable land. She goes alone with only her faithful dog, Shadow. She's in the process of writing an Encyclopedia about the fae. One of her colleagues, Brambleby, from Cambridge, shows up uninvited to 'help' her with her research. Which is good, because as much as Emily knows about the fae, she doesn't know about how to interact with humans.

Brambleby is her only friend, and he helps in more ways than one. She suspects that Brambleby knows more about the fae than he is letting on, and wonders if he is one himself. I'll let you read the book to find out if she's right or not.

The setting is fantastic, and the storytelling was absorbing—complete with footnotes as is fitting for an academic paper. The relationship between Emily and Brambleby was a very slow burn. These characters will return in a second book that I'm looking forward to reading.

So Good! So Cozy! submitted by ewraback on July 12, 2024, 3:24pm This is the perfect cozy, academia read for the fall. It is an interesting story with well-written characters. It was a very well written book, the prose was just beautiful. And the description of the areas really does make it feel like you're reading a field journal. I truly enjoyed this book so much!
