"From the New York Times-bestselling author of Cutting for Stone comes a stunning and magisterial epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala, South India, following three generations of a family seeking the answers to a strange secret. The Covenant of Water is the long-awaited new novel by Abraham Verghese, the author of the major word-of-mouth bestseller Cutting for Stone, which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States alone and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years. Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India's Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning-and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala's long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl--and future matriarch, known as Big Ammachi--will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants. A shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the difficulties undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. Imbued with humor, deep emotion, and the essence of life, it is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years"-- Provided by publisher.

The Covenant of Water submitted by leighsprauer on February 27, 2024, 7:50am The Covenant of Water came highly recommended, but when I got it I realized that it has the same author as Cutting for Stone, which I had read several years ago. I thought Cutting for Stone was mediocre at best, but I gave The Covenant of Water a fair shot.
It was just okay. Verghese presents a sweeping history of several generations of a St. Thomas Christian family living in Kerala, focused on a medical mystery that takes decades to solve. It's clear that Verghese himself is a physician: four of the characters are physicians, and the book includes detailed descriptions of their work. (Note: like Cutting for Stone, this book isn't for the squeamish.)
It was a quick read, and, except for the medical talk, enjoyable to read. The characters were well-developed and believable, but the plot was somewhat cheesy. The writing was okay. Sometimes I read a book and think that the author really wanted to be a screenwriter, or at least was hoping that someone else would make a movie out of it. In other words, he has an exciting plot and likeable characters, but isn't really a great writer. This is one of those books.

Loved it submitted by czadams on July 21, 2024, 7:10pm I liked the multigenerational story format and their children and grandchildren's experience. I learned a lot about the Christian Indian experience. It was beautifully written, especially the way they describe the experience the characters go through.

good but slow submitted by gw on August 11, 2024, 9:24am This is an interesting story with generations of well developed characters. However, it read really slowly for me and is a long book, so be prepared for devote a decent amount of time to get through it.

Wonderful complex story and quality Literature, submitted by lballard on August 24, 2024, 6:53pm This is not only extremely well written, the story is compelling. Even better one of the storylines based on an actual genetic condition. I did find that doctor friends enjoyed this book more than other readers. However even non doctors rated this book at least a four out of five.
