"Part travelogue, part culinary history, all capitalist critique-comedian Jamie Loftus's debut, Raw Dog, will take you on a cross-country road trip in the summer of 2021, and reveal what the creation, culture, and class influence of hot dogs says about America now. Hot dogs. Poor people created them. Rich people found a way to charge fifteen dollars for them. They're high culture, they're low culture, they're sports food, they're kids' food, they're hangover food, and they're deeply American, despite having no basis whatsoever in America's Indigenous traditions. You can love them, you can hate them, but you can't avoid the great American hot dog. Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs is part investigation into the cultural and culinary significance of hot dogs and part travelog documenting a cross-country road trip researching them as they're served today. From avocado and spice in the West to ass-shattering chili in the East to an entire salad on a slice of meat in Chicago, Loftus, her pets, and her ex eat their way across the country during the strange summer of 2021. It's a brief window into the year between waves of a plague that the American government has the resources to temper, but not the interest. So grab a dog, lay out your picnic blanket, and dig into the delicious and inevitable product of centuries of violence, poverty, and ambition, now rolling around at your local 7-Eleven. The hardcover edition of Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs includes gorgeous endpapers, an illustrated case, as well as illustrations by the author throughout. "One of the freshest and most insightful new comedic voices of this decade." -LINDSAY ELLIS"-- Provided by publisher.

Great balance of humor, investigation, and personal narrative submitted by tcramer318 on June 9, 2023, 10:07am Love Jamie Loftus from her podcasts, so when I learned she was writing a book I knew I had to check that out. This book is also for hot dog enthusiasts and people who love a takedown of capitalism.
Informative and Entertaining! submitted by pjaynes on July 29, 2023, 7:23pm Similar to my reluctant curiosity of how hot dogs are made, I was very intrigued by Loftus' summer of the hot dog, where she traveled the country in the midst of the pandemic and sometimes ate (at least partially) four or five hot dogs in a day. Why would anyone do that to themselves? The answer is that it results in one very engaging and insightful book. Raw Dog provides great commentary on hot dogs, the meat industry, the pandemic, small businesses throughout the U.S., and Loftus herself, all told through her relatable voice.
Great Mix of History, Travel, and Commentary

And a fascinating snapshot of the US in the summer of 2021. I loved the history - how sausages in the US led to the Depression-era favorite, hot dogs - and Loftus's commentaries on the meat-packing industry then and now. I was amazed by the regional variety of hot dogs Loftus consumed, if a little disappointed that Michigan and its coney dogs did not appear.
I still don't understand the fascination with Joey Chestnut and the Nathan's hot dog eating contest. It's one of those American extravaganzas that make me feel like an anthropologist in my own country.
