"Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general--also known as her tough-as-talons mother--has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don't bond to "fragile" humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother's daughter--like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She'll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise. Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret."-- Provided by publisher.

Exciting action fantasy submitted by sjarvis on June 12, 2023, 6:25pm Gripping story with a lot of action; great for a fun summer read. The characters read a bit young, more for a YA audience, but there are some more adult sex scenes, so be warned. I recommend reading the paper version above the audible listen.
great read submitted by lemontea557 on July 8, 2023, 8:02pm This was so much fun to read. Filed with adventure, romance, and magic!
Incredible Book submitted by Riawhitebell on July 14, 2023, 10:25am This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's passionate, full of drama, and has interesting characters. It definitely reminds me of Sarah J. Maas' writing, so if you like her you'll love this book.
Great book submitted by pratibhamahesh on July 15, 2023, 11:13am Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Soo much drama and action. Definite read from me
Peak Nostalgia submitted by bookasaurusray on July 17, 2023, 10:46am Brings me back to when I was a teenager and just absolutely loving YA fantasies!
Loved it submitted by eileenw on July 28, 2023, 3:22pm The feel is Vorkosigan Saga meets Dragon Riders Of Pern meets Divergence.
Finally the charm of YA fantasy, but for adults (and written by not SJM) submitted by clk.9123 on August 13, 2023, 1:49pm It’s nice to have a new epic fantasy series by an author who is new on this scale. Fans of Sarah J Mass will for sure like this one. There’s been some mixed reviews but I think if you like character driven high fantasy this will also be for you! I also found a lot less things problematic in this than in other similar books which I enjoyed.
Incredibly fun submitted by glwwg on August 17, 2023, 10:10pm I wouldn’t say this is the best written book I’ve ever read, and it starts especially clunky, but if you hang in there it becomes incredibly fun. It’s basically all the YA series tropes from the last 15 years, plus DRAGONS. What more could you want?
Fun read submitted by yasioasasi on August 20, 2023, 11:05am I was expecting a bit more Naomi Novik-style writing and it’s definitely more YA but overall a fun read!
A standard fantasy addition submitted by shankart on December 10, 2023, 6:51pm Did anyone else feel that this was a rebranded version of Hunger Games? Wasn't as compelling to me as Sarah J Maas which seemed like more original world building
Writing isn't great, but get ready for an addictive fantasy read
submitted by foilista on June 13, 2024, 10:58am
Fourth Wing is perfect for fans of YA fantasy who don't mind some recycled tropes and clunky writing. Yes, it rehearses basically every fantasy trope in the book. (Dragons! War games! Magical boarding schools!) Yes, Yarros tends to include 21st-century isms ("hot minute," "endgame") that don't quite fit the medieval-fantasy setting. But the action is fast-paced, there's a smoldering enemies-to-lovers romance, and this is an absolutely addictive read.
I also loved the race, gender, sexuality, and disability inclusivity.
Loved it & Can't Wait to Read the Sequel!
submitted by KalishE on June 15, 2024, 5:52pm
It's been a long while since I've been this absorbed in a fantasy world but I was INTO this! I was taking this to the gym with me and I would sit and bike while reading. I kept biking longer and longer without noticing the time flying by, I was that engrossed.
As noted by some of the above reviews, there are a number of sex scenes which you may not want to accidentally find yourself reading in public on the off-chance that the exercisers on the ellipticals behind you can read the text as well so that's something to keep in mind. As I recall, those scenes don't crop up until the second half of the book so the first half is gym-friendly!
Dragons, magic, mystery, and MANY romance scenes submitted by Shannonviolin on June 16, 2024, 8:38pm Did you ever read Tamora Pierce and wish for more (and open door) banging? Look no further! Really fun read, on the serious side, it’s a differently abled heroine overcoming her struggles with military school.
Fourth Wing submitted by Ghutton88 on June 16, 2024, 9:17pm This book was great, a ton of intrigue, and I was immediately sucked in to the story. lots of spicy scenes though so not for kids
author's ailments submitted by aScheller on July 2, 2024, 12:16pm Symptoms of Violet Sorrengail, though attributed to a childhood fever, are similar to the Ehler-Danlos syndrome affecting connective tissues that Rebecca Yarros says that she sustains
The story moves fast and pulls you along submitted by alharman1022 on July 3, 2024, 11:23am This story has a strong female character and it moves fast. I couldn’t put it down! Love the magic
Couldn't Put It Down! submitted by clmills58 on July 7, 2024, 2:45pm A fast paced and well written read! It was impossible to put it down and I loved the world the author created and dropped the reader into. Can't wait for the next one.
Fun read submitted by rose.lorenz on July 8, 2024, 10:56am Love the dragons and adventure- this book reads easily and is a lot of fun. I could have done without the “steamy” scenes, but maybe that’s just me. (More dragons and action, please!)
So good! submitted by jlcbrooklyn on July 10, 2024, 10:12pm Love this book. Fast pace, full of twist and turns, a can't put it down read! One of my fav romance fantasy books I've ever read!
Fantastic read submitted by allilruff on July 14, 2024, 9:03pm A great read for anyone who grew up on Harry Potter and Hunger Games. I could not put it down.
3 Stars submitted by srakes2425 on July 15, 2024, 1:28pm This book reads like a CW show. The love triangle is a lot like Twilight’s, and the setting is a bit like…Hunger Games with dragons and magic. If you value the relationships between characters more than fantasy story/world building then you will like this book.
Recommend! submitted by mscheich on July 17, 2024, 12:20am Not a huge fantasy reader but really enjoyed this book! Very fast paced, lots of twists & turns, and enjoyed the characters!
Great book submitted by lucajl on July 17, 2024, 10:12am I really enjoyed this book and was hesitant to start it since it was fantasy, but I recommend!
enjoyable fantasy read submitted by kittenkat101 on July 18, 2024, 1:01pm Fourth Wing was a fun fantasy read. Yes, it's full of YA fantasy tropes, but it was engaging and enjoyable as a quick read.
Great new fantasy series submitted by sarahkirstencox on August 2, 2024, 9:35am I read the first and second books in a week. Can’t wait for the third!
What is everyone reading?!
submitted by cwalton1999 on August 8, 2024, 8:02pm
A bit of a spoiler alert. Don’t read if you want to go into this with a clear head.
I’m not sure what book everyone else is reviewing. Because the reviews of their “The Fourth Wing” and the version I read are oceans apart. My book was literally one YA trope after another. Nerdy girl put in an impossible physical situation and wins? Check. Cold mother with unrealistic expectations for her children? Check. Hot guy with a secret that falls for nerdy girl? Check. And, the sex scenes? Cringe. Does our title character make it through the impossible training? Well, duh, of course. Do the scariest dragons pick her out of every other candidate? No surprises here. I couldn’t stand this book but I am stunned by its popularity. There are FAR better books than this.
Fun submitted by alyson702 on August 12, 2024, 10:46pm I started the audiobook and had to switch to a physical copy because the poor narrator had a cold and it was painful to listen to! Despite a rough start, it was such a readable book -- an adventure, a little spicy, and worth a read. I admit that I don't feel compelled to read the next one in the series, but I am glad I read this one,
a thrilling ride submitted by laurenalysse on August 20, 2024, 11:38am Loved this harry potter-esque romantasy book with an imperfect female lead with the odds stacked against her and an enemies to lovers storyline. The dragons are endearing and some of the best characters in the book.
first time reader submitted by curlyqueen on June 11, 2025, 11:43am I am new to fantasy, but so many people were talking about this book that I decided to give it a go. Needless to say, I am on the 3rd in the series. Enjoyable, quick read with interesting characters and some spice.
Lives up to the hype submitted by tcronenw on June 13, 2025, 8:22am This is an addictive read. I’m sure if it’s not for everyone but if you like the dragon romantasy genre, this is a good one. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
I don't get the hype submitted by christienolan2 on June 15, 2025, 8:04am The book started out promising and appealed to me, but halfway through, it became entirely focused on the romantic aspect with every other page being a sex scene. I just wanted more dragons.
just not my cuppa
submitted by apknapp on June 17, 2025, 4:59pm
The writing wasn't bad, actually, and the graphic audio format was sort of interesting. But I just didn't get into it, for a few reasons:
1) Not sure how many times I'm supposed to believe that the only person who can save the world is a teenager, but my disbelief is starting to come unsuspended.....
2) This seems impossible, but somehow a story about deadly obstacle-course training and dragon riding was actually boring
3) God save me from love triangles. BLECH.
Entertaining Enemies to Lovers submitted by kimreed444 on June 17, 2025, 9:40pm I’m bias as a lover of romance - thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was even better the second time I read it.
Disappointing submitted by sellis612 on June 23, 2025, 11:09am This did not at all live up to the hype for me. The storyline and writing were so simplistic I thought it was a YA at first. The plot is so predictable and cliche. Nothing is very original except the dragons and even that’s questionable. I LOVE high fantasy romantasy and I have never disliked a book more. Pick a different series!
Dragons, but…
submitted by Tacokitten9k on June 24, 2025, 2:20pm
As someone who will pick up any book regardless of age rating or genre, of course I pulled this one off of the shelf to read. I like the dragons and the story building around them, but I found the romance parts to be a bit… weird, for my taste at least. I’d definitely recommend this book for mature readers that like even more mature content, but if you’re just a simple person wanting dragons and fantasy, this is definitely not the book for you.
Hope this note helps if you’re trying to decide whether or not to read it!
Addictive world building submitted by stacey.cleveland on July 1, 2025, 8:34pm Excellent world building and character development! This is not a finished series and the third book ends on a cliffhanger! We don’t know when the next one will be out yet.
Lackluster on re-read submitted by adivens on July 3, 2025, 8:22am Re-read before Onyx Storm came out and certainly decreased my original rating. Too basic of a story line and very predictable plot.
A great escape! submitted by hl3206 on July 21, 2025, 1:16am I so enjoyed this book. I had heard so many good things about it, but was hesitant because I don't often love fantasy novels. This book captivated me from the very start, though! The world building is well done and I enjoyed it all.
Great book for many reasons! submitted by mmarsh22 on July 22, 2025, 12:07pm As someone with ehlers danlos, it was honestly so cool to see a main character have extremely similar experiences in her body as I do, when you typically don’t see this chronic illness represented! It truly made me look at having EDS in a different (better) way!
Enjoyable, not the best writing submitted by mjsowder on July 22, 2025, 2:11pm Loved the world and most of the characters but the writing left me wanting at times. Enjoyed the first read but would not re-read.
11/10 submitted by ShelbyEJohnson on July 24, 2025, 9:58am Fascinating world building and addictive story telling. Characters that are at the same time awe inspiring and relatable.
it’s a fun read! submitted by katiefurms on July 28, 2025, 9:26am the story was great, some lulls but mostly super exciting. and the ending just ripped me in half
