COMMUNITY REVIEWS

NOT a silly chick movie, but not as good as it could be. submitted by Tassos on February 25, 2024, 7:40pm I borrowed this DVD after seeing "Oppenheimer" which I critiqued here earlier.

Most people had the misconception that of these two "blockbuster" films of 2023, "oppenheimer" was seen by serious (and possibly also smart) moviegoers while Barbie by birdbrains.

And the god-awful pink packaging may have let many to believe that.

Instead, this movie started great, but along the way it greatly fizzles and does become a typical, silly Hollywood movie, filled with stereotypes.

A pity, because its beginning was so promising. Its end is completely the opposite, as lame as they get.

disappointing submitted by mandevil on March 17, 2024, 12:46pm After all the hype i expected more. Missed opportunity to really be relevant to issues facing women today with all the current climate of toxic masculinity and taking away women's rights we fought so hard for.

Colonoscopy Ken submitted by tarascon on May 23, 2024, 4:19pm ^^^ Agree with both. Three stars.

This was a movie I never imagined I’d watch but the hype got me curious.
Curiosity killed my foresight; basically this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing purporting to be “feminist” while actually it smells of Hollywood’s old boy spirit responding to the Me Too movement. It also seems like a marketing vehicle for Mattel.

I’m surprised that Greta Gerwig allowed herself to be co-opted so blatantly by any corporate studio. Added to that insult, she didn’t even get the gratitude of an Attagal for creating this cash cow. In other words, how in hell did Gosling (a solid actor in other star vehicles) merit an Oscar nomination for his bit?

Fun submitted by betsywil on June 13, 2024, 6:09pm Started out superb.
I wish the rest was as great.
Catchy music, too.

Loved this movie! submitted by ilanamerm on June 21, 2024, 9:37am I really loved this movie! I think it gets overly criticized for being "Feminism 101" and not going in-depth, but the fact that it only scratches the surface makes feminism palatable for a variety of audiences.

Fun movie submitted by Krystal on June 22, 2024, 11:05am Fun movie with good music

Won't be watching this one again! submitted by aec on June 27, 2024, 7:28am The movie definitely started off curiously enough--it didn't last long.

Fun, but does leave something to be desired submitted by am_nich21 on June 29, 2024, 9:08am I really enjoyed this movie but it felt like it pulled a few of its punches related to social commentary. In particular the mom-daughter subplot felt a bit half baked to me. I thought the ending was touching and overall it was a fun watch.

Good film for a nostalgic crowd submitted by timbresson on July 1, 2024, 12:38am I found the film quite enjoyable - sure it had a lot to say and was a bit long in the tooth, on the nose with the strong women empowerment. But I found looking through it with the eyes of a 90s kid was the right lens - it’s not full on modern “woke”, but it has a lot of the beginnings of those conversations. It’s a good reminder that things can just be complicated and no one piece of media can solve it or stand in for the whole discussion

I’d say it was okay submitted by dailyreader on July 4, 2024, 11:29am I liked the message and the dancing and the nostalgia, but I wasn’t as engaged during the movie as I hoped to be.

I loved this moviw submitted by caroline.north89 on July 7, 2024, 12:06am I loved this movie so much

Enjoyable, but….. submitted by Zekicmom on July 16, 2024, 9:09am By the time I saw this movie there had been so much hype I thought it was going to be life changing. It didn’t do that for me. The opening of the movie I found upsetting (girls destroying their baby dolls violently instead of just casting them off), and it took a while for me to get past that. The movie was well cast and is especially fun when the Barbie world is being introduced to the audience. Worth a watch, but temper your expectations.

Barbie submitted by skiger on July 17, 2024, 10:04am I really enjoyed this movie and so did my kids. Visually it is very well made. It was a great way to introduce "the patriarchy" to my daughter and my son is obsessed with Ken and Ryan gosling now.

Surprisingly Enjoyed submitted by zman on July 30, 2024, 11:41am As a mid 30s male, I didn't have high expectations for my foray into the Barbie World. But I thought it was a very well done film, with a great message. I was entertained the entire time. Well done!

Great fun & fab visuals submitted by Cloverdale on August 2, 2024, 9:12am As a theatre designer, I would recommend seeing this movie just for the production and costume design. The bus stop scene is breathtaking, especially if you know who the old woman is. There are a lot of fun Easter eggs throughout as well. It’s kinda “patriarchy 101” and the plot gets muddy at times, but overall I enjoyed seeing the movie with my kid.

Barbie submitted by lstorc on August 4, 2024, 1:01am Barbie is incredible! The feminist messages are clear. The costumes and musical numbers are spectacular!

Stunning submitted by sellis612 on August 8, 2024, 11:20am A great movie for all ages and genders. Visually stunning, witty and profound in the best possible ways.

interesting submitted by yufamily on August 9, 2024, 12:48pm Barbie It’s always good to questions the status quo… Our true identity is never tied to someone or material possessions. It’s worth taking a good hard look at the purpose of our lives.

Great flick submitted by Darb on August 11, 2024, 10:24am Was highly entertained by this. It's a great movie, with a great message. Recommend it for viewers of all ages.
