Swift's approach to songwriting focuses on storytelling, and here she mines her personal experiences to create a thematically cohesive collection of tracks that revolve around heartbreak. The results range from petulant to emotionally nuanced, with a mix between anthemic declarations of power and slower songs that ponder the fallout from failed romantic relationships. No matter the mode or the genre, Swift has panache, and this album is no exception to that rule; it's not her strongest, but it is remarkably consistent with a few hidden gems in both the main release and the extra vault tracks.
