Part 1: foundations -- The rise and fall of pseudo-productivity -- A slower alternative -- Part 2: principles -- Do fewer things -- Work at a natural pace -- Obsess over quality.
"The author of Digital Minimalism and Deep Work offers a philosophy for pursuing meaningful accomplishment while avoiding overload. History's most creative and impactful philosophers, scientists, artists, and writers mastered the art of producing valuable work with staying power. In this book, Cal Newport harnesses the wisdom of these traditional knowledge workers to transform modern jobs. Drawing from research on the habits and mindsets of a varied cast of thinkers from Galileo and Isaac Newton to Jane Austen and Georgia O'Keefe, Newport lays out the key principles of "slow productivity" and provides step-by-step advice for workers to replace the standard notion of productivity with a slower, more humane alternative"-- Provided by publisher.

Okay submitted by zmclaugh on June 14, 2024, 7:38pm A lot of anecdotes and not a lot of actionable content.

Eh... this one is a skip submitted by foilista on July 23, 2024, 1:47pm I'm a fan of Newport's other work, especially Deep Work and Digital Minimalism. Although they both can be pretty insufferable, and downright dismissive of "nonproductive" (aka domestic and gendered) labor, they offer some thought-provoking philosophies of how to live a full and focused life.

Slow Productivity, on the other hand, pretty much repackages Newport's previous books for the "quiet quitter" generation. I appreciated that he's clearly rethinking his theories with more attention to actually living well -- and he even talks about parenting for a whole two pages! -- but there isn't a lot that's actually useful. There are SO many anecdotes about famous people and their work habits, and I'm pretty skeptical that the lives of Jane Austen and Benjamin Franklin are particularly relevant for contemporary knowledge workers.

Also, it's a bit rich to read a "slow productivity" book from someone who is clearly addicted to the hustle.

An interesting perspective submitted by danibersche on August 4, 2024, 12:28pm I appreciated the idea of reframing viewing productivity with a longer lens, looking at things over years rather than days or weeks.

SOOO entitled submitted by mowjac on March 14, 2025, 4:09pm If I read one more book by a white wealthy guy who talks about productivity without acknowledging the labor of cooking, childcare, house management and other "trivial" things that make his productivity possible, I will vomit. This is my first Newport book and I was completely turned off. Maybe some nuggets but too much entitlement to wade through. I prefer Oliver Burkeman instead.
