"A shimmering, joyful new novel about a pair of opposites with the wrong thing in common, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry, Daphne always loved the way Peter told their story. How they met, fell in love, and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. Too bad it turned out to be more of a prequel, a complication to Peter's actual love story, the one that ends with him dumping Daphne before their wedding to begin a relationship with his lifelong best friend, Petra. And so that's how Daphne's story really begins: stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children's librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only other non-Peter-related person she knows: Petra's heartbroken ex, Miles Nowak. Just until she can get a new dream job literally anywhere else. Scruffy and chaotic, Miles is entirely the opposite of buttoned-up Daphne, and they mainly avoid one another until one night, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship. Miles decides he will convince Daphne to give Waning Bay a real shot. He'll show her why he loves this idyllic town and its residents, and if they happen to post deliberately misleading photos of their adventures together--for a particular audience of two--who could blame them? Miles believes Daphne deserves the chance to build a life here, her own life. As she begins to fall for the town, Daphne wonders what this summer is supposed to mean. Is it just for fun? An interlude to her own love story? Or maybe it was never meant to be a love story? Maybe it was just an anecdote to share at future dinner parties: that time she fell in love with her ex-fiancé's new fiancée's ex-boyfriend. Who's to say?"-- Provided by publisher.

Cute but.... submitted by clarka on June 22, 2024, 12:34am I also don't really remember what happened? I don't think it's Emily Henry's greatest work by a long shot.

Great beach read submitted by Bethybeth07 on June 28, 2024, 8:40pm I love her books. They always give me the warm fuzzies. Cheesy? Yes. Predictable? Absolutely. Entertaining? For sure!

ACTUALLY a Funny Story submitted by mbarby on July 1, 2024, 10:25am If you’re a fan of Nick Miller from New Girl, this is the book for you! Daphne: a shy children’s librarian living in a lakeside Michigan town with her picture perfect fiance, Peter. Miles: a scruffy bartender/jack of all trades with a penchant for farmer’s markets, dating Petra, who happens to be Peter’s childhood best friend. Shortly before Daphne and Peter are due to be wed, Peter realizes he is actually SUPER IN LOVE WITH PETRA and basically kicks Daphne out of their shared home. Mutually heartbroken, Miles and Daphne shack up together. You can guess what happens next.

I really loved this story, specifically because it placed such a huge emphasis on developing real friendships and retaining your personhood instead of melting into a relationship. Some romances are so obsessively focused on the main characters that it almost feels like they’re not even real people anymore because everything is so focused on the love story. This was also, true to title, very funny. Michigander approved :D

Fun summer read submitted by A2AE on July 1, 2024, 1:43pm A fun read for Emily Henry fans. I like the literary elements she adds to her characters, and here the protagonist is a librarian with character depth related to what libraries meant to her as a kid looking for a refuge and now as an adult. I also like the setting in a Sutton's Bay-ish town and descriptions of Up North settings. A great, light read with a wonderfully predictable happy ending.

Got me out of a reading slump! submitted by athena.le16 on July 3, 2024, 7:27pm I heard that Emily Henry is a great author to get you out of a reading slump and it certainly did! One of the main characters in the book is constantly lauded for having genuine curiosity in people. This must be the case for Henry, too, because she does an impeccable job of describing every character from her book, from the main characters to the ones that just show up for a page. She sees the world through a sharp, dynamic filter and its fun to see through her eyes for bit.

Sometimes when the characters talk about their backstory, the dialogue drags on for too long, and it's too... perfect? It spells out the explicit formula of why the character is the way they are like a diagnosis. It's not realistic because people don't talk like that in real life. If the golden rule of writing is showing instead of telling, this is straight up telling. I think she could've been a bit more creative here.

That said, this dialogue I'm talking about is a small fraction of the book and does not make reading it unenjoyable. The majority of the book is pure wit and fun.

cute submitted by harringtonm on July 5, 2024, 9:59am not her best but cute! some of the dialogue was a bit cringey and i didn’t find myself as invested in the story as i have with some of her other books. quick read tho and would still recommend for henry fans!

Easy read, Michigan town submitted by robinpollak on July 5, 2024, 9:09pm This is a feel-good book like the literary equivalent of a mug of hot chocolate. Just soothing. I love the Lake Michigan coastal setting and the reassurance that we can all find love despite our flaws.

Good read submitted by jlcbrooklyn on July 10, 2024, 10:24pm Fun loving and a quick read. Not Emily's best work but still a great read if you love her work.

All Good, But Somewhat Stale submitted by mecunningham on July 17, 2024, 5:26am As usual, I raced through Emily Henry’s new novel as soon as I got my hands on it. Funny Story is a good story, well told—but it felt like a bit of a rehash of Henry’s first book (and still my favorite), Beach Read. Again, we have a female main character who is trying to start over in a small Michigan beach town after her life has fallen apart; again, we have a slightly mysterious male main character who could use some lessons in communication. There’s also a lot of plot in Funny Story, and some threads get dropped fairly quickly (I was glad, for example, that Miles and Daphne soon forgot that they were supposed to be fake dating). It’s all good—Henry is a gifted writer who can navigate a mix of comedy and introspection with the best of them—but somewhat stale. I’ve returned to Beach Read again and again; I don’t see myself doing the same with Funny Story.

Truly a funny story submitted by majean on July 24, 2024, 2:13pm Another Emily Henry book that takes a romance trope and turns out on its head. More emotional vulnerability than others I've read of hers. Enjoyed all the Northern Michigan mentions.

Fun Summer Read submitted by tamhil on July 28, 2024, 9:43pm I found the book to be enjoyable to listen to as an audiobook. I found the Northern Michigan setting engaging and well done. The plot was predictable at times, while other smaller details were more unexpected.

Fast and fun read submitted by dailyreader on July 28, 2024, 11:09pm I needed an easy and happy ending book to get into and read fast, and this suited my needs well!

Adorable Up North Story submitted by lmatson96 on August 3, 2024, 10:45pm Really enjoyed Emily Henry’s latest novel, set of all places, in Northern Michigan! The book was heartwarming, the protagonist is relatable, and it made me laugh out loud several times.

Another win from Emily Henry submitted by laurenalysse on August 10, 2024, 9:57pm Really enjoyed this romance from Emily Henry that returns to Michigan (like beach read). The characters are interesting and loveable if a bit flawed, and as always the banter between the love interests is top notch. The fictional setting of Waning Bay was a fun touch - it was fun to try to figure out the real life analogue for the town and various other locations in the book.

Take this with you to your up north vacation submitted by klrand on August 15, 2024, 2:34pm I read this while up north this summer and felt that it gave me a new perspective on interacting with the local community and landscape up north. I wanted to feel a part of it in the way that Daphne is welcomed in. A perfect page turner summer romance.

Cute & Easy submitted by Nataliemadams on June 20, 2025, 10:19pm Fun to read with its northern Michigan references. Predictable but very enjoyable.

Best Emily Henry Book submitted by adriebrady on June 23, 2025, 3:56pm Best EH book for sure! A must read :)

Easy read submitted by karenkay on June 25, 2025, 10:37am Loved the Michigan references!

Fun but.. submitted by krutekw on June 25, 2025, 5:57pm Entertaining read with interesting characters but very predictable. Great if you want to turn your brain off and just enjoy

Loved the Setup... submitted by IsabellaRose on June 28, 2025, 12:32am And then honestly I loved the execution! I went into this book wondering if it would fall short of the hilarious "the dumped exes are getting together" setup, but Emily Henry has done it again. The characters were incredible, the banter between them was perfect. I loved it!

Gets better over time! submitted by shreyasunshine on July 16, 2025, 9:37am I read this book when it first came out in 2024 and wasn't impressed and found it difficult to get into. However, this year I read it again, listening to it on audiobook (narrated by Julia Whelan, the GOAT), and I enjoyed it a lot more! I would say this is Emily Henry's best portrayal of a romantic relationship slowly unfolding over time. The characters definitely have chemistry and I loved the setting. I didn't love the miscommunication/sort of third act break-up at the end (it reminded me a lot of Beach Read in that sense), but overall I liked the book and this is one of Emily Henry's books that I'll be returning to in the future.

Better than the usual of this genre submitted by jkelleher on July 17, 2025, 8:03am It's predictable but that's what we love right? The characters have more depth and explanation for their stumbling to and away each other. It went on longer than I wanted (enough already! Get over yourselves!) but overall it was worth the read.

I'm glad I read this submitted by SurfGrape on July 19, 2025, 10:19am FUNNY STORY by Emily Henry is a roommates-to-lovers romance with an unusual twist. Daphne and Miles have both been dumped…by the same couple. When Daphne’s boyfriend leaves her for Miles’s girlfriend, there’s only one thing to do—move in together. Just to share rent, of course. Just until their broken hearts heal, of course. They’re not going to develop feelings for each other, of course. (They totally are, though!)

Daphne was such a relatable heroine. She sort of lost herself in her last relationship, and now she's trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs. Miles is a sweet cinnamon roll who is working so hard on being loveable, he still hasn’t quite figured out how to let himself love back.

Add in the Northern Michigan setting (my favorite place!) and I was sold on this book from the get-go. In the past, Emily Henry has been hit-or-miss for me, but FUNNY STORY is amazing and I'm so glad I read it!

Fun beach read submitted by danibersche on July 22, 2025, 9:55am Especially if you’re a Michigander reading it at the lake, haha. There are a couple of cringey bits, but overall a solid romance novel.

Funny Story submitted by klb10 on July 23, 2025, 9:15pm A fun story, perfect (lake) beach read. Love Emily Henry!

Cute story :) submitted by emkyoungs on July 24, 2025, 5:50pm I enjoyed the Michigan references! Cute story :)

My Absolute Favorite submitted by bookasaurusray on July 29, 2025, 1:54pm This is my all-time favorite by her! Love the connection between the main characters!

More librarian focus would have made it better submitted by BawkyNea on August 10, 2025, 5:35pm I don't know if I'm just not an Emily Henry fan, if romance isn't my genre, or if this book was truly just okay. Some of the descriptions were just cringey and weird. I loved reading about Daphne's love for librarianship and would have loved to see this have a more central focus throughout the book. There was some refreshing emotional vulnerability that made for some more enjoyable moments. Are there options for better romance options? I'm still on the hunt for better ones.

A cut above submitted by zdyrkoem on August 16, 2025, 8:35am I enjoy Emily Henry novels but I admit they were starting to blend together a bit before this- lots of enemies to lovers in different settings, etc, etc. I found Funny Story to be a bit more nuanced though. It deals not only with romance but moving on from heartbreak, and I liked that the two main characters shared that experience- it gave them some more depth than characters in similar books. Of course, it's still a romantic comedy, so the plot won't take you by surprise. Still, I enjoyed it more than I expected and recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet and romantic read.
