'Pushin' Too Hard' is a 94-track celebration of 1960s garage punk, a retrospectively named genre first compiled on Lenny Kaye's seminal 1972 collection 'Nuggets'. This is raw, exciting music with tons of attitude - fuzz guitars, swirling organs, wailing harmonicas, thumping drums and tough vocals are plentiful. In the mid 1960s, teenage rock 'n' roll groups proliferated throughout the USA, often inspired by 'British Invasion' bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds as well as US styles including surf, blues and folk rock.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Heavy submitted by rossorr on March 18, 2025, 3:10pm Huge collection of garage rock and proto-psych includes a few Michigan acts like A2's 'The Rationals.' It's everything you might dream of, as a slab of fuzz guitar anthems featuring snarled vocals and pummeling beats, topped with searing Farfisa or harmonica lines.

Note this is nearly four hours of often fierce and frantic music. Take breaks and pace yourself if you'd like to absorb it all within AADL's 2-week checkout window. (The iffy mid-60s sound engineering can contribute to listening fatigue.)

Undefined Proto-Punk submitted by Meginator on August 10, 2025, 10:08pm This box set shows the less-refined side of 60s rock music, as bands expanded beyond the sounds on the radio and experimented with different effects and instrumental lineups. Nothing here sounds too out of place to contemporary ears, and the music clearly belongs to its own place in time, but it feels rough around the edges, pushing against the boundaries of expectation and taking some risks. What is especially compelling about this collection is the way that the bands build on their own musical influences, and how varied the results are; some songs clearly come straight from the blues, hinting at what was to come from mainstream bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, but others seem to originate from a pop sensibility, or from the Beatles' emerging pop-rock blend. A few of the tracks bear the slightest hints of a more punk sensibility to come, especially in the drumming, but everything still fits into the decade's signature defining sound. This music is both an alternate side of the now-popular musical conception of the mid-60s and an obvious product of it, including a few selections that have punctured the hegemony and become part of the typical radio rotation but consisting primarily of hidden gems that demonstrate that some musicians are always interested in exploring the edges of acceptable, expected sound.
