Monk is a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish Black book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Thought provoking submitted by lisibit on June 15, 2024, 7:55am This dramedy has lots of publishing industry satire but also tackles complex issues like family relationships and aging. I really enjoyed it.

I loved this movie submitted by jrpolaczyk on June 25, 2024, 7:44am I thought it deserved more at the Oscars. Well written, well acted. Funny. A great pick up from your local library.

Worth a watch submitted by RebeccaWittekindt on July 7, 2024, 8:54am This best picture nominee is great. A good amount of drama, comedy and poking fun at oneself and societal expectations. Everywhere he turned our main character was praised as he was trying to sabotage the very element he was fighting against. Some unexpected twits and "Hollywood " ending, be damned.

Thought-provoking submitted by shannon5 on July 28, 2024, 1:42pm I appreciate that this film tackles the paradoxes of American culture and isn’t afraid of leaving things ambiguous. It doesn’t propose a simple answer to the question of why our culture is so steeped in the voyeurism of racial trauma. The dialogue and conflicts felt real. The coinciding plot of caring for an aging parent and reconnecting with family in itself felt like a refreshing and nuanced response to the frustration that our cultural institutions seem to only promote a single story of Black American life. While at times heavy-handed (and it is a satire so in some ways I can understand that), this was thought-provoking and I’m eager to talk about this with everyone I know.

Wine Wednesday! submitted by jeff gustafson on September 9, 2024, 6:11pm Very funny with a serious message. Perfect wine Wednesday flick.

GREAT, surprisingly good movie! submitted by Tassos on November 29, 2024, 9:00pm Certainly not your average idiotic comedy from Hollywood. But this movie, while classified as a "COM", is far more. It is a scathing criticism of pretentious idiots involved in the Book award Circuit, and so much more!
