"Skim" (Kimberly Keiko Cameron) is a not-slim would-be Wiccan goth who goes to a private girls' school. When her classmate Katie is dumped by her boyfriend, who then kills himself, the entire school goes into mourning overdrive. The popular clique stars a club to boost school spirit, but Skim sinks into an ever-deepening depression.

A dark and humorous visual diary submitted by torikaebaya on February 4, 2017, 12:41pm A dark and humorous visual diary, Skim introduces us to the story of Kim, a girl attending Catholic girl's school in the early 90s. Best described as "moody", Kim is more than a little anti-social. She's Wiccan and falling for her English teacher... or, she would be but that teacher skips town and out of her life as soon as she realizes she might be developing feelings for her student. Through the course of the story, Kim slowly loses her best friend to popularity and a boyfriend, while Kim just watches life pass her by. Kim probably communicates best to her diary and the story sometimes shifts to flashbacks. Skim is a realistic, slice of life story of a girl trying to find herself in a world she finds little joy in.

Go Queer Books! submitted by jucruz on July 13, 2019, 7:59pm That’s all I have to say. Read for yourself and get sucked into a good ol’ angsty romance. It’s amazing.

So Underrated submitted by shira.pilarski on July 25, 2020, 1:40pm One of my all-time favorite comics. Mariko Tamaki's story of a queer chubby mixed-race (Japanese and white) teen who attends a school that is suffering a Heathers-esque rash of suicides is poignant, but still relatable. But the real star of Skim is her cousin Jillian Tamaki's art. The use of blank space evokes Kim's existential vibe, and panels are cut in intriguing ways to draw the reader's focus where it needs to go. A complex, unforgettable entry into the canon of queer comics.
