Our past life -- Whose woods these are -- Going to town -- Good girls and golden curls -- There is a happy land far, far away -- The way home -- There won't be horses -- Fragments of a dream -- Anywhere East or South -- The road back -- Be it enacted -- Unremembered.
In this funny and thoughtful guide to a romanticized version of the American expansion west, children's book editor and memoirist McClure (I'm Not the New Me) attempts to recapture her childhood vision of "Laura World" (i.e., the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her Little House books about an 1880s pioneer family).

For fans of Little House submitted by jmbookout on June 29, 2011, 6:28pm This is an easy, fun read for fans of the Little House series of books. The author recounts her rediscovery of the series as an adult after her mother's death. Driven by a desire to recapture the special feelings she felt while reading the book as a child, she attempts to recreate some of the experiences mentioned in the book (grinding her own wheat, churning butter) and finally embarks on a multi-state tour of the historic sites where the books took place.

Ultimate Little House Fan submitted by Sara W on July 31, 2012, 9:53am I could relate to a lot of this book - I adore the Little House books and have read and re-read them so many times that I could probably make headcheese if I had. to. If I HAD TO, that is.

Wendy McClure takes her love on the road as I'm sure many Little House fans have considered. Her review of the different homesites is interesting and useful - maybe I will make it out to Plum Creek some day, although Pepin, WI would probably be my first pick.

McClure brings a great sense of humor and her great love of the books beautifully to the page, making the book great fun and real pleasure to read.
