Friendship to the Max! submitted by valerieclaires on June 24, 2015, 5:09pm What's not to love about Lumberjanes? This graphic novel reminds me of what I wish Girl Scout camp had been like. These five Hardcore Lady-Types end up bunking together at camp, and enjoy your typical scout camp activities - canoeing, hiking, plant identification - but something is a little bit off at their camp. The Lumberjanes keep running into supernatural creatures intent on ruining their camping experience, and must battle each phenomenon without running afoul of their camp counselor.

I liked how each chapter (I guess with the serials in comic book form, they'd be more like issues) was based on a Lumberjane Scout Badge, and it was fun to try to guess what each badge was for and try to read the text from the scout manual from behind the collage pages. It reminded me of earning badges in the scouts and in the Sumer Game.

My favorite part of this series is the characters. Each girl is unique and has character traits that contribute to the group. They're strong females in comic books, which you don't often see in popular entries in the genre. They're smart and funny, and able to handle themselves - definitely Hardcore Lady-Types.

Whether you remember your time in a scouting organization fondly or your idea of basic camping is a hotel with fewer than three stars, you'll enjoy the themes in this book. Pick this one up for its strong female friends at the center of the story, stay for their supernatural battles.

Hardcore Lady-Types of All Types submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on July 3, 2015, 12:59am This really is a fantastic series and I can't recommend this book highly enough. I wish it had existed when I was a young lass, but I enjoy it now as an adult, and I'm so happy it exists for everyone these days, especially the younger crowd!

The Lumberjanes describe themselves as "Hardcore Lady-Types" and breezily show the wide range of what "lady-types" means - namely, all types. The scouts are a diverse cast of characters who bond over their shared adventures among the strange goings-on in the wilderness surrounding their camp. They may be trouble-makers or loose cannons, but they're also steadfast friends and respect the Lumberjanes traditions.

I look forward to the next installment of their lives and adventures, and hopefully there will be more revealed about an older character's clearly colorful past; and I am also admiring the delicate (and suitably awkward) progression of a romantic relationship amidst all the supernatural havoc.

Lumberjanes is rather like Girl Scouts meets The X-Files and is liberally sprinkled with witty dialogue.

Keep an eye out for homages both overt and subtle to Indiana Jones and many other pop culture adventure and mystery stories.

supercool submitted by Jackie77 on July 21, 2015, 3:24am Fabulous book about girls and camp. The diversity is amazing

Awesome Ladies submitted by downing on June 18, 2016, 12:57pm Super fun graphic novel to read. Make sure you reserve ALL of them! The first one ends on a cliff-hanger!

Inclusive! submitted by jillian on June 20, 2016, 8:05pm Positive teenage LGBT characters!

fun book submitted by camelsamba on July 7, 2016, 2:39pm This was a fun book to read while chaperoning 7th and 8th graders at an outdoor education camp - (counselor) Jen is a good reminder of the attitude NOT to have :-).

Clever submitted by kathscot on August 23, 2016, 3:19pm Clever use of outdated Scout-like text with fun art. Definitely mysterious.

So much more than just strong female characters submitted by nsvinicki on August 9, 2017, 2:28pm I trot this series out every time someone asks for a comic recommendation because I love it so much! I am so glad that it exists, even if I wish that something like this existed when I was a wee child. As it is, I'm embroidering my own versions of the patches so I can relive the best memories of my Girl Scouting days - even if those were few and far between.

This series is so amazingly inclusive. We have charachters of every demographic, race, gender, and orientation. All these things are not trotted out as campy representations or stereotypes, they're integral to the characters. The message is deeply personal - be who you are and value others for who they are. Form friendships everywhere. Care about others. Be compassionate and understanding. Learn skills that will help enrich your life and the lives of others. Give back. These messages are things I wanted out of scouting, but never got. It's so empowering to boys, girls, men and women.

I disagree completely with a previous reviewer - the scout handbook pages at the beginning of each chapter are not outdated at all. They are actually highly progressive, and very inclusive. Nothing in the Lumberjane code (except the part about God, which is always crossed off) is non-inclusive.

Please read this. You won't regret it. It's sweet and heartfelt and exciting and fun.

amazing submitted by Aimless on August 29, 2021, 3:39pm a comic book / graphic novel where the girls are the heroes! not to mention there is a queer love story, a trans girl, a gal with two dad's! then the villains are cryptids, mythological and supernatural monsters!
I love it!

very nice submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 29, 2023, 11:02pm This is a fun story for young and middle school readers. I saw this graphic novel at library events for years, and when my 16yo and I came across it in the library recently, we brought it home just to check it out. It’s full of action, great characters, and wonderful modeling. This is delightful.
