It all started when a youth and teen librarian, teaching cartoonist, comic shop owner, and comic book writer got together over a decade ago to plan a “comic con in a library,” hoping to spread a passion for comics—both reading
them and making them—especially among younger readers who had become an afterthought for many publishers. We could never have predicted what the first Kids Read Comics Convention in 2009 would blossom into. Ten years later, the Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival is a place where national bestselling graphic novelists, talented Michigan and Midwestern comics creators, and local cartooning students showcase their work in artists alley and share their comics passion with the kids, teens and adults who come from all over to peruse their books and participate in A2CAF’s games and workshops. This comic is a celebration of all of that. We can’t give enough thanks to all of those who’ve helped KRC and A2CAF grow along with the kids’ comics world: the Ann Arbor, Chelsea, and Dearborn libraries and their hardworking staffs; Vault of Midnight; the Ann Arbor Art Center; 826 Michigan; publishers DC and Top Shelf; and the guests and attendees who believe, like us, that comics can change lives for the better. We hope to see you at A2CAF 2019 at the Ann Arbor District Library on June 14, 15, and 16!
