Proto-Nerdcore submitted by Meginator on June 21, 2020, 2:54pm This early nerdcore album layers quickfire rapped lyrics over 8-bit chiptunes to good effect, with video game references sprinkled throughout. Some of the lyrical references are a bit strained, but many are clever and make good use of the source material. The music is excellent and surprisingly subtle, and the musical backdrops use sound effects with admirable restraint, keeping the big moments in reserve and deploying them appropriately for the most effective impact. This album isn’t perfect and I didn’t care for the winking nod at misogyny (if you’re going to call it out, why then proceed to...do it?), but as a chiptune and nerdcore fan I found this album inventive and enjoyable.
