Did you ever wonder who made the first popsicles?
Or if your ancestors made snow cones with maple syrup?
Me too!

I guess we'll never know who made the first frozen treat because the evidence was eaten long ago, but it's always fun to imagine new stories...

Wabooz has a brand new idea for a delicious treat, but will everything turn out as he hoped? Travel with him through the lands where the pawpaws grow in search of the perfect fruit!

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Heartwarming winter story submitted by landone on June 20, 2025, 10:36am After reading the digital edition of this delightful story, I know I will need to purchase a physical edition once it is released. I loved experimenting with turning random foods into popsicles in the winters and being a little menace as a child, so I felt right at home reading this. The art style was beautiful, especially the squirrels(!!), and it fit so well with the playful writing style. We need more Indigenous children's literature in the world, and I'm so thrilled this exists!

Beautiful children's book with great message. submitted by Dan Bonenberger on June 29, 2025, 10:03am Imaginative tale of a child's invention of the first popsicle (or "pawpsicle" since it is made of pawpaw fruit). Stephanie Babij's illustrations are brilliantly colored with a bold palate of fall colors that stand out sharply against the white backdrop of an early-season blizzard. Ariel Ojibway's charming story connects young readers with our natural history, through the eyes of Wabooz, an adventurous Anishinaabe child. Wabooz explores the forest, following a set of deer tracks through the snow and revealing fundamental human values -- respect for creation, life (of all kinds), and putting the needs of community, others, and future generations above our own immediate desires. Includes a nice glossary, recipe for pawpsicles, and background on Anishinaabe culture and history. Outstanding! -djb
