Summer Game 2016 - All Systems Go!

by andrewjmac

You've been waiting, mostly patiently. You've fretted a bit, sure. You may have bitten your fingernails down to nubs waiting and worrying. But wait no longer...

SUMMER GAME 2016 IS HERE!!!

And when I say HERE, I mean EVERYWHERE! If you look, you'll find great codes both inside and outside every AADL branch, all over the AADL catalog, onstage at TOP OF THE PARK, at events around town, in the parks, in the museums, IN YOUR HEAD! The only question is: Where will you START? Here's a few suggestions:

-Visit every AADL location and collect the copious codes! Malletts Creek, Pittsfield, and Traverwood all have 10 codes hidden around the building, Downtown has 15 codes PLUS every building has a BIG code on the banner outside (all banners are going up as we speak)!

-Revisit everything you've read, watched, and listened to since last September and tag, rate, and review them in the catalog!

-Join the conversation and comment on any post on aadl.org (including this one)!

-Just sit down and read a book or watch a movie! Remember, you get up to 1000 points a day for every minute/page you read, watch, or listen to! It all counts!

-Try the first round of badges, our GETTING STARTED series!

Getting Started

If you don't have any idea what ANY OF THIS is about, don't worry! Head over to the Get Started page to learn how YOU can join in on the fun and start earning points to spend on AMAZING PRIZES in the Summer Game Shop starting on JULY 8!

And the rest of you? Well, what are you waiting for? GO!

I'm so excited, the library game is one of my favorite things about summer! Only now I am officially worried about getting everything done that I must to do in the next week......

Thanks for doing such a fun program! I know West is closed for the summer-- does that mean no banner at the construction site as well?

YEA! I look forward to this every year. I'm gonna really give it my all this year.

Hooray, was worried due to lack of activity on this page and in general not hearing much buzz in the offseason, that maybe it wouldn't come back! But patience paid off, and here we go!

Question: I'm presuming this is the getting started badge drop. Does this mean that there is still a Week 1 Badge Drop coming this evening like in past years? Or is noon the new time for weekly badge drops, and this is it for today?

WE wanted to have the Getting Started badges up when the game started. We'll be dropping more badges tonight around 6PM for the first official Weekly Badge Drop! Thanks for playing!

Hooray, the 2016 Summer Game has arrived! My friends and I have been counting down to this day all week :) Can't wait to start earning points and badges!

What exactly is the theme this year? I see that there are animals, but are they taken from something?

The AADL Summer Game of 2016 its happening now, let's get this party started quickly.
There will be lots of fun, adventure, discovery, and learning not be missed! :) :) :)
Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!

Summer game is the best way to procrastinate cleaning, gardening, errands,...just about any chore you can tiink of!

The Summer Game is Here, The Summer Game is Here, The Summer Game is FINALLY Here - Whoo Hoo!!

I am so happy that the summer reading game started again. I can't wait for the new badges and riddles. Thank you AADL for making this game!!

Hope the Summer Game is fun for everyone.

Out of curiosity, do lists earn points this year?

Welcome back, everyone! (including the hard working behind-the-scenes techies :^)

Are you going to get points for creating and putting items into lists? Is there going to be a list badge?

Yay I'm third on the leaderboard! I love the summer game!

Yea! Summer Game! I'm afraid I won't have nearly the amount of time in years past to play though. But it's so addicting... must earn all badges...

I agree, AprilCDB, it's totally addicting! I always get bummed that I can't get to more events since I'm usually working another desk during the event. It's like you get addicted to the codes and the points you get from them. But it's totally fun. :)

Well, the top for are me and my friends, and we collaborate to get all the codes, we've gotten all of the badges so far. Other than that, we went and rated all of our checkout history.

@Katharina Geschner

You can still get badges from 2013-2015 Summer Games, but 2011 and 2012 have now been retired. They'll soon be moving off the Badgelist and into the Badge Graveyard.

-andrew

I attempted to enter the code for the first question for the 2015 badge "Bears & Chairs!" and got a message that the code had expired on September 1, 2015. Is this just a glitch?

Ahh, so excited to have Summer Game back again! Looking forward to the summer. :D

I am working on the Danger on The track badge and I need help figuring out the very first clue. I am hoping that one of you gameres out there can help me with one more clue.
Thanks so much
Lmd3577

Yes! It's back. And I'm sooo slow in getting started. More than 100 people have already earned some of those badges.

We have waited what seems like forever for the summer games!! Super EXCITED!!!!

Aww, since I only discovered the joy of the Summer Game last year I have been working through all the badge clues for previous years over the winter. Bummed that the time I spent on 2011/2012 has no payoff, but I suppose that's my own fault for not playing sooner! :D

And speaking of lists, I just looked at my lists and I'm sure a couple good, long ones that I had worked on for my and my children's benefit are missing. Were lists deleted? It's frustrating to put that effort into something and have it disappear.

@SBNB, I can see the lists I've created when I go to "My Account" and click on the "My Lists" tab. Are they missing from there?

By the way, if you have to get a new library card (e.g. you lose your wallet, maybe just a few months after you got another new card because the previous one was cracked and losing bits), the checkout history gets turned off by default. If you want to earn points for checkouts, make sure you re-enable it!

SBNB: did you find your lists? I have never had any disappear, but items have been deleted from my lists. I spent a lot of time -- and I mean a LOT -- over the winter, working on my lists. Especially as the library now keeps most TV series together instead of individually, and I had a lot of lists with TV shows! I hope you found them.

My family has been waiting for MONTHS for the Summer Games to begin. Can't wait to start earning badges and learning lots of new information.

My family counts down the days till AADL Summer Game. Can't wait for another rousing summer of trivia, scavenging, and participating.

I'm so excited for the summer game to come back!! I'm ready to read, watch, collect codes and more! I can't wait to see what the summer game shop has in store for us this year!

I have enjoyed the summer game the past couple of years. Enjoyed exploring several city parks last year.

The summer game is my favorite thing about summer! Three cheers for the game!!!

So excited that the game is back! Already digging into my history and searching the catalog. Looking forward to upcoming events too. Can't figure out how to enter friends this year, but expect to soon!

Do we know if the West Branch will be up and running by the end of the summer? I checked the initial post for an update, but I didn't see anything. Is there at lease a banner code out front to get?

True696

Bannerama instructions say to find all five codes, but with West closed, it should say four!

My family has six friend codes, all posted last year: OFFER773, REPEAT974, WHISPER467, RING766, FIRE779, and NUMBER394. My granddaughter, who, at 11 weeks old is playing for the first time, is LITTLE 479.

We've heard about the game for a few years now and finally we've signed up and are playing. We're super excited!

I made this comment last year, but it bears repeating, I think: especially in light of the AADL's status as the home for the county library for the blind, and the library's efforts at inclusiveness, I am disappointed that the banner codes are so very small and hard to read. One really needs to have 20/20 vision to see them and be standing in a very particular location.

It is not safe for drivers to try to read it while they drive past. There should be a larger version of them at ground level at the entrance to or inside of the library. Obviously players who are blind are not going to be on their own driving past, but it would be nice to communicate through actions that those of all vision levels are invited to play the game. The library staff is a bit overly optimistic at best, and oblivious at worst, because they cheerily advise players that they have to look outside, but the print is very hard for some to see, including children with vision issues who wouldn't be driving anyway but are eager participants. The high visibility sign colors help those with low vision participate. (It would be nice to consider whether blind patrons would be interested in code chasing as part of a team and including Braille on those signs, but at least they are of reasonable size to those with low vision.) But the outdoor signs are just not inclusive as they currently are.

Thanks AADL for all your hard work all year long to make the Summer Game so much fun! Players, please add me as a friend: CUTE369

My kids had so much fun searching for codes! We spent an hour going through every floor of the library. Great idea!

Does Josie's code count towards the 15 at downtown? I appear to be missing one and I thought I had them all when I was there on Sunday. Guess I don't know how to count.

Nevermind. Figured out why I'm missing one.

Gosh.... I'm really, really hoping there will be an inclusion of codes in the OLD NEWS blog. That was the most fun hunting from 2014. I love revisiting the old pictures and funny articles. Also, If you're reading this and you got the 3rd clue from the Hitch badge, can you check out my question on the newest Summer Games post?
Thanks!

I do it every year and it's always loads of fun! There's many reasons why Ann Arbor Libraries are awesome and this is one of them!

I'm so happy about the summer game! I love finding codes and buying things in the game store. It's always exciting to see new things in the store!

so fun

@andrewjmac - I tried to enter a code from last year's "A deer and a dog" badge and it told me that the code expired on September 1, 2015 so I couldn't redeem it. Help?

Thank you to all for the friend codes. Here is one more: PAINT464. Good luck to all!

Thank you for once again bringing us the Summer Game!

And thank you for changing the way the Friend Codes display. It is very nice to not have the long list at the top of the screen.

I saw in the comments that the codes for previous badges from 2013-2015 are supposed to still be available for earning. When I attempted a couple different badges from 2015, though, I was told for every code I tried to enter that it had expired last year.
I'm assuming this is just an oversight, and it's not a big deal, but I just wanted to let you know that the codes aren't working. Thanks! :)

I'm really happy that our 14 year old daughter is now playing (and enjoying) the summer game!

@icecreamandkitty - I tried entering you friend code, but for whatever reason it's not recognized as valid. Is it possible there's a typo in the code you posted? Just wanted to let you know that it doesn't seem to be working :)

- FAVORITE496

Hurray! Thank you to all those who make this possible. The Summer Library Game is something that I look forward to every year.

@anderson.cee.
Welcome!
Please add me as a friend and get the point!
Here's a hint- make your player code part of your name so that others can easily add you.
It will accrue points for you!
I am Lean633

I was eagerly waiting for this again, but then life got crazy right at the same time and I haven't started yet! Going to try to get underway NOW.

@shupa1

Good luck! Don't hesitate to ask for help on the various posts they make if you don't understand something. :)

Just received postcard in the mail and plan to start playing immediately! Sounds like a terrific summer activity - centered around one of my favorite pastimes and favorite AA institutions.

Thank you to all the creative people who make this Summer Game happen. Our family so appreciates AADL and are thankful for this treasure in our community.

@Midnight

Same here! I don't know what I would do all summer without the Summer Game. It's so nice to have something to occupy my free time besides Facebook.

@taurualady00 - Thanks for listing your codes! I added them to my list. If you add me in return, we'll both get bonus points. I'm STAR473.

So happy to have moved back to A2 so I can play the summer game! My code is: DREAM493. :)

@ myseoulruns - I added your friend code! Thanks for having me on your list already. :)

My family says I'm obsessed with the Summer Games, I guess I am. Thanks for being one of the highlights of my summer every year.

@DL - Hey, obsession isn't necessarily a bad thing!
And yes, likewise. I look forward to Summer Game every year. :)

This is my first summer in Ann Arbor and I'm loving this game! Sad I didn't start playing til August; now I know next year to start earlier! Thanks for putting this together!

@ldobroski23 - Hey, better late than never! Welcome to Ann Arbor, and welcome to Summer Game! I hope you continue to enjoy it. :D

Look forward to the Summer games every year. Thanks for being one of the highlights of my summer.

The Gala was a sweet ending,
It was exciting to see the folks wending
Their way around.

The cookie was quite yummy
and hit the spot in my tummy,
Now I'm home-bound.

I used the photo booth
And smiled, to tell you the truth-
Nobody frowned.

I thank you for all the fun,
it seems like we just begun!
We've all landed safe and sound!
