Whatever Floats Your Boat

You know what's cool? SHIPS. You know what's even cooler? BIG SHIPS! You know what's even cooler than THAT? BIG SHIPS THAT TRAVEL THE GREAT LAKES! Huge freighters (called "lakers" when they're on the Great Lakes) have traveled all over the lakes since the late 1800s carrying limestone, iron ore, salt, coal, and other materials from mines in the northern Midwest to industrial centers farther south. Some of these freighters are over 1,000 feet long and a lot of them have some pretty wild stories. Let's learn about them in this badge!

Hi @amk08. The ice cutter shares its name with the bridge that connects the upper and lower peninsulas! Except the ice cutter spells its name like the city, rather than the bridge or island. Hope this helps! -Elizabeth, AADL staff
