“ ...if the word “mead” automatically conjures a drinking hall filled with Vikings for you, think of ours as its friendly, approachable descendants, without the pillage and plunder.”

                                                                                                                 —Bløm Meadworks

Bløm Meadworks in Ann Arbor, Michigan celebrated its one-year anniversary on May 11, 2019. If the first year is any indication of what the future holds, denizens of Ann Arbor can look forward to taking their taste buds to Valhalla repeatedly, because Bløm’s approach to making mead is all about flavor.

Bløm’s crafted meads are light, dry and carbonated, a style known as “session mead” in the parlance of mead makers. Every ingredient is sourced from Michigan, but that’s not all. Bløm meads aren’t thick and sweet like traditional meads because they’re made in the style of dry craft cider. This brings out delicate nuanced flavors worth contemplating.

How do you describe the flavors in something as subtle as session meads? You taste and tell. Indulge your taste buds and your brain as we evaluate four session meads, and learn how taste, smell and mouthfeel shape flavor perception. Enter curious and walk out buzzed on knowledge with a sensory lexicon for mead (session meads contain 7.5% alcohol or less).

Taste & Tell is a delectable series of programming led by flavor and fragrance expert Michelle Krell Kydd, who blogs at Glass Petal Smoke. Taste & Tell events take place at local eating and drinking establishments, and are sponsored by the Ann Arbor District Library. Edutainment never tasted so good. Michelle's lecture is free to all participants, but those wishing to have a taste will need to purchase their own mead tasting flight for $6. All attendees will get some free smells and free tastes of honeys too!
