Call & Response

Note! Apparently the Stamps Gallery has closed for renovations. We're sorry that you won't be able to complete this badge! Save the trip and http://aadl.org/contactus if you need help!

No worries, this one won't be required to earn the Arbor Explorer Master Badge.

This badge takes place at the Stamps Gallery @ 201 S. Division Street, Ann Arbor. Hours: Tuesday/Wednesday/Saturday & Sunday 11AM-5PM, Thursdays 11AM-7PM. Closed Mondays and holidays.

Thanks to the staff at the Stamps Gallery for writing this badge!

This badge is an exploration of Call and Response, the 2019 Summer exhibition at the Stamps Gallery. It celebrates the legacy of sonic resistance in Detroit and beyond, featuring the work of artists Romare Bearden, Chakaia Booker, Tony Cokes, Saffell Gardner, Allie McGhee, and Tylonn Sawyer.

At the heart of the exhibition is the refurbished Blue Bird Inn Stage once situated in the
Blue Bird Inn, a legendary jazz club in Detroit that was open from the 1930s until the early
2000s. The stage, on which hundreds of musicians performed, was a premier stop for renowned African-American musicians such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

The exhibition explores the relationships between music, art, and media and how they shape our understanding of American history and contemporary culture.

When you’ve found the answers to every question bring your sheet up to the front desk for the final code.

Let's get started! The gallery is not large, but you will be generally be working from the left to the right from the entrance. The wall plaques by each piece will be helpful.

You may be able to recognize the material Chakaia Booker uses in her works, as it’s something you see everyday. If not, don’t grow tired, look at her other works for some clues. What are these artworks made of? The answer (two words, no spaces) will be your first game code.

Saffell Gardner is another artist who experiments with everyday materials. In these works he includes paper, paint, tin foil, and buttons. How many buttons are on Saffell Gardner’s painting titled “Sunny”? Spell out the number for your second game code.

The theme of this show is jazz! How many jazz musicians are pictured in Romare Bearden’s artwork titled “Untitled (Jazz Players)”? Spell out the number for your third game code.

Tylonn Sawyer’s work centers around themes of identity, both individual & collective, politics, race, history, and pop culture. What important civil rights leader is depicted in Tylonn Sawyer’s painting “Congregation: MLK”? Spell that name out, with no punctuation or spaces as your fourth game code.

The Blue Bird Inn Stage was in a state of disrepair before it was refurbished in 2016 and turned into a portable stage. Now it travels around the world, welcoming artists to perform on the same stage as some of the greatest jazz musicians in history. It’s even been to France! What city does the stage call home? This city spelled out is your fifth game code.

Which 3 colors make up the backdrop of the Blue Bird Inn Stage? The order of the colors should be the same as the order we list them for the US flag. Type the names of the colors, with no spaces between in that order for your sixth game code.

Look inside the display case next to the stage and take a listen. One of these jazz albums has a red cover. What is the street name on that album? The street name is your seventh game code.

Once you find this code, don’t forget — swing by the front desk for your *very* last code for this badge!

Ditto. The person did not have the code when I was there either. I felt like I put him on the spot when I asked.

FYI - there is actually 1 more button than what the code is on “Sunny”. I counted several times.

that is because the blue button is actually not a button it is a pin, so that makes it seventeen buttons

Ok, this is a problem. My system won’t load the fifth code no matter how many times I reboot.

So arrived at Penny Stamps Gallery this evening to get this badge and it was closed for renovations. Disappointing, as one assumes if NOT noted you can do a badge until the last day Aug 31. Please note specific time frames for these situations up front. Thank you. Still love the game regardless of this hitch in the process.

We were there yesterday morning and also noticed that they were in the process of installing a new exhibit, so we could not complete the badge. The code in the window was still visible though.
