Secret Codes #1
Take one record executive, two backup singers, and a string of hits in the 70s and what do you get?
Tony Orlando and Dawn!
Adorable Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis was working as a music executive at Columbia Records when fortune knocked on his door.
Accomplishments of a major kind had eluded him when he discovered a song that other studio executives had passed on.
Unknowing what the future held, he recorded the song anonymously to avoid a conflict of interest.
Data began to accumulate that his song was a hit!
Exhibiting all the flair of the era, Tony Orlando, Telma Hopkins, and Joyce Vincent (of Detroit) formed the band Dawn and began touring the US and Europe.
Burning up the charts, the band had a string of top hits.
Eventually, Hopkins and Vincent assumed the role of backup singers.
One of the band’s biggest hits refers to a secret code between neighbors.
Maturing into television personalities, the band had its own show on CBS.
Coinciding with the end of the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, the show only lasted two and a half years, but was still a hit.
Compelling melodies and iconic images made this band a favorite of the 70s.
"Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” was another massive hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn that was essentially another song with a secret code, this time between estranged lovers.
Discographies of the band are heavily populated with greatest hits releases, as a testament to Tony Orlando and Dawn’s lingering popularity.
