Just before we turn to ciphers, there is one more kind of secret message to explore -- STEGANOGRAPHY! This is the art of hiding or obscuring a message instead of changing it. One classic example is the Cardan grille. When a piece of paper with holes in it is placed on a text the words that show through the holes reveal the secret message.
