Bestselling Rockers

Sometimes supergroups form with the WORLD'S GREATEST MUSICIANS. And sometimes it's like this.

This badge is a HARD ONE, y'all, and requires some RESEARCH, but we're CONFIDENT in your ability! (Plus, we'll be monitoring the comments, ready to give extra hints as requested!)

UPDATE: There is a SNEAKY SITUATION occasionally happening when folks Google to find the band website: sometimes another website DISGUISES itself as this band's domain in the search results. We'll link directly to the REAL WEBSITE in the second clue (we don't want to give away their name here!)

I am stuck on number #. I know her name and her other band's name but I didn't get it right.

I suspect you're very close! Her other band has the Spanish word for "the" in it. Leave that out, and search the catalog for the remaining two words, and you should find your code!

#3 is definitely the clue in this badge that makes you work the hardest! Here are some tips:
-Look at the list of the authors in the Rock Bottom Remainders. (Mitch Albom, Dave Barry, Sam Barry, Roy Blount Jr, Greg Isles, Kathi Kamen Goldmark, Stephen King, Matt Groening, James McBride, Ridley Pearson, Amy Tan, Scott Turow)
-You're looking for an author who has written popular books in both Fiction and Nonfiction. This should help you to narrow down the list of who wrote the book you're looking for.
-In the hint, there's a link to the wikipedia charts for the #1 bestselling titles in Fiction by year. You're looking for a title that is on the list three years in a row. This is the step that definitely takes some time, but if you determine what author writes in both Fiction & Nonfiction, you can look just for books by their name and skim over all the rest (doing a ctrl/cmd f search will help you find the name even faster).
-Once you determine the title that's on the list three years in a row, do a Google search to find out the name of that book's sequel.
-FINALLY find that sequel in the catalog, and you will find your code.
Oh! And one important last step:
-FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR HARD WORK AND YOUR SEARCHING SKILLS!

Everyone, don't make the same mistake I did, and use the list of authors from 'the original members of RBR' list on their website, use the list that you get when you click 'about the band members'

I was certain I knew what the book was, and even what their nonfiction one was with the same honor, but then I was equally certain it didn't have a sequel. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Should have gone with my gut, would have saved me a lot of time had I just checked! 😂

Is anyone else still stuck on #3, even with the help? I've gone through the fiction lists for several decades, and while I might know who the author is--I think I know the nonficton book referenced--I haven't been able to find a book that's appeared more than three years. I've tried looking into the sequels for ones that have appeared twice, with no luck so far...

Let me give you some more hints, as I suspect one of the times it showed up must have slipped past you, if you've looked through decades. The fiction title that was on the list was published in 2003 and was first on the bestseller list that year. Its sequel (where the code is hidden in the catalog) came out in 2018. Hopefully that gets you there. If not, give me a nudge and I'll keep on hinting!

I just looked at the list of the authors who write fiction and nonfiction. If they had that many years of bestselling books, it had to be someone who I would know well. I checked the author who I thought it probably was and I was right. It was easier than any of the other clues.

The author is a newer member and not always listed especially in older lists and official Google lists. But, he is a name easily associated with New York Times bestsellers. You could say he is literary royalty.

I found this code going through his book listings in the catalogue on a guess for a different clue. The clue given by the library requires a lot more work.

Do a Google search for "Rock Bottom Remainders 2020." You're looking for a Youtube video from July 2020. As said in the original clue, this video only references one book. Find that book in the catalog, and you'll find your code!

I think this one should be worth more points. Each of the steps in the badge consists of several steps.

I know how you're feeling! Some of our badges are designed to be easily solved. Some (like this one!) are intentionally a lot harder. And there's a whole lot in the middle. I like to think of it all balancing out over the course of the game! We don't want people to see our easier badges as less valuable because they are an important part of the game too!

I seem to be the only one stuck on clue 4. Pretty sure I know the person, but no hits in the catalogue.

Hard, even with all the staff hints (Thank you!!!)

But the video makes it all worthwhile.

#5 is proving really hard for me because the guitar is so loud I can't understand half the lyrics

Hmmm, I wonder if you're watching the correct video, as the guitar isn't particularly forward when played on my laptop speakers. It's a video posted in July 2020 and has a runtime of 5:25.

If that sounds like what you're watching, you can turn on the CC for the video (and even mute the sound if it's bothering you). I just double checked and the lyrics are accurate at the key moment that references the book.

Clue #2: I left out the appropriate Spanish word for "the" (of course, Spanish has 4 words "the" and I left out the correct one, right?) and have searched and searched the catalog for the other two words, but the titles that pop up do not have a code.

You're so close! Make sure you don't have quotes around the remaining two words in the band and don't accidentally pluralize the last one-- you're searching for two 5-letter words.

I have tried looking up the original name of the story, which is The Body and have come up with nothing. I have looked up Different Seasons, which is the compilation that it was included in. I have searched for the fake name of Stand By Me, which was the movie. I have found no codes and I'm at a complete loss.

For the last clue, do a Google search for "Rock Bottom Remainders 2020." You're looking for a Youtube video from July 2020. The author and book you're looking for is around the 2:10 mark. Search for that book in the catalog and you'll find your last code!!

I hope that helps and thanks for playing!! :)

Hi there! The hint contains the quote, "most heavily promoted musical debut since the Monkees". A good first step is googling that quote (WITH the quotation marks) and see if you can figure out a band associated with that quote! The 3 word band name (minus "the") will be your code!! :)

I hope that helps and thanks for playing!

Wikipedia is going to be a helpful resource for this one! Find the name of the band's founder (who also is the only person not known primarily for her writing). If you go to *her* Wikipedia page, you can find the name of her other band. Leaving out the first word (which is Spanish for "the"), search the remaining two words in the band name in the catalog.

I need help with #4. I don't know where to look to get the inductees. I tried the hint and it seems not to be helpful.

If you look at the wikipedia page for the band, you can see a venue they played at in 1995 that is a place that inducts musicians into a particular hall of fame. On that venue's website, you can find the list of people they honor broken down by year. (Or, you can Google "[name of venue] 1995 inductees" and it should take you directly to the correct page!)
