This year's summer reading theme, Make It Happen, is a celebration of DIY (Do It Yourself). All WLBPD patrons are invited to participate and be eligible for several fun and fabulous prizes! Reading Program for YOUTH Read or listen to at least ten books by Friday, August 13, and we will duplicate one book from our WLBPD collection and mail it to you as a summer reading prize. Stamp your reading log and get a sticker at the Library after reading or listening to three, six, and eight books. Reading Program for TEENS The teen game offers a variety of ways to participate, from reading books and listening to podcasts to attending events. Choose and complete ten activities by Friday, August 13, and we will duplicate one book from our WLBPD collection and mail it to you as a summer reading prize. Summer Reading 2010: Make It Happen! Register today! NOW CIRCULATING AT AADL: BIG BOOKS! Located in the Youth Department at the Downtown AADL, these huge format picture books are particularly useful for children with impaired vision or for those who read to a group of children. To browse this collection in the AADL catalog, a search by call number "Big Book" works well. LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO READ? While you can always call us for assistance in selecting and ordering books, there are several other options available for you to search for and acquire materials on your own. MI SBPH TALKING BOOK AND BRAILLE CATALOG The Michigan Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped provides an online catalog where you may search and request books. Anyone may search this catalog, but a login and password are required to place a request. NLS/BPH ONLINE CATALOGS The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped provides a number of online options for searching for books and magazines in Braille or audio formats. These options may be accessed directly by going to loc.gov/nls/index.html and include the following: ¥ Both "Basic" and "Guided" searches of the Voyager catalog (over 323,000 titles) ¥ The Kids Catalog, which includes audio, Braille and print/Braille books for preschool - grade eight ¥ Magazines in accessible formats ¥ Braille Book Review: lists of recent Braille books ¥ Talking Book Topics: lists of recent audio books ¥ Annual lists of Braille and audio books ¥ Bibliographies of Braille and audio books on various subjects BRAILLE & AUDIO READING DOWNLOAD (BARD) If you're eager to read digital books not yet available on digital cartridge or you have not yet received a DTB player, but have your own NLS-compatible commercial player, you may download books from BARD. There are currently more than 18,000 digital books (DBs) and 40 magazines available for download. You may access BARD directly by going to nlsbard.loc.gov. In order to download books from BARD, you must first apply for a login and password. Only patrons actively registered for service through WLBPD, or through another library within the National Library Service network, are eligible to download from BARD. Downloading from BARD requires a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, a USB drive and an NLS-issued or NLS-compatible digital talking book (DTB) player. Wicker, O.D., FAAO, from the UM Kellogg Eye Center Low Vision & Visual Rehabilitation Service, will discuss the different magnifiers and occupational therapies available to people with low-vision who wish to enhance their independence.
