Washtenaw Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled @ AADL (734) 327 - 4224 WLBPD @ AADL.ORG VOLUME 2, NUMBER 1 WINTER 2012 WLBPD @ AADL NEWS Your Opinion Matters To Us! In 2012, the WLBPD @ AADL will conduct a formal patron satisfaction survey to assist us in determining what we're doing that's working well; what may not be working well; and, how we may better serve our patrons. In an effort to reach as many of our patrons as possible, the survey will be made available for patrons to respond to in a variety of ways, including by mail, phone, email, or online. If your preference is to respond by email, please email us at wlbpd@aadl.org to provide or confirm your current email address. Of course, we always welcome your feedback! If you ever have a question or a suggestion, please don't hesitate to let us know. Book Clubs to Go WLBPD @ AADL has just made Book Clubs to Go (BCTG) more convenient. In addition to placing audio book requests for all book club members, providing a large print book discussion guide and a recorded version of the guide on a thumb drive, we've now added downloadable versions. You may download a large print PDF of the discussion guide, and/or you may download it in a text file format. If an audio file of a guide is available, it will be here, too. These guides include an author biography, suggested discussion questions, read-alikes, and other book group tips. You may find more information about Book Clubs to Go, including access to the new downloadable guides, at: http://wlbpd.aadl.org/services-events. Magnatune Discover new albums, artists, and genres with AADL's music download service, available through a relationship with the digital music publisher Magnatune. Playable on any device you choose! To download music, you will need to log in to your AADL online account. If you don't have one, you will need to set up an online account before being able to download music. Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads 2012 The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads program is a community initiative to promote reading and civic dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing a common book. The theme for the 2012 Reads is Language: How We Communicate, and the official selection is Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant by Daniel Tammet. A selection team composed of community members, educators, students, and librarians from the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas chose the book from a group of three titles, all of which centered on the theme Language: How We Communicate. The other titles under consideration were Lost in Translation: A Life In A New Language by Eva Hoffman and A Man Without Words by Susan Schaller. All three titles are available on recorded cassette through WLBPD @ AADL, and Born on a Blue Day is also available on digital book, large print, and via Braille and Audio Recording Download (BARD). Born On A Blue Day by Daniel Tammet Born On A Blue Day is a journey into one of the most fascinating minds alive today - guided by the owner himself. Daniel Tammet is virtually unique among people who have severe autistic disorders in that he is capable of living a fully independent life and able to explain what is happening inside his head. Daniel sees numbers as shapes, colors, and textures, and he can perform extraordinary calculations in his head. He can learn to speak new languages fluently, from scratch, in a week. Daniel has savant syndrome, an extremely rare condition that gives him the most unimaginable mental powers. Fascinating and inspiring, Born on a Blue Day explores what it's like to be special and gives us an insight into what makes us all human - our minds.
