Sophie, Kevin, and the Banana God of the Future KABOOM! WHAM! BOOM! POW! BANG! Sophie was looking out the window, wishing she could set off some fireworks too. Over the week, Sophie had heard that the whole neighborhood except her was going to set off fireworks on July 4th. “Do you want some ice cream or cookies?” asked Amelia, Sophie’s mom, coming into the room. “Please can I go set off fireworks?” said Sophie for the 10th time. “I told you, it’s too dangerous.” “But it’s July 4th!” “I said no, and that’s final.” A flash of anger ran through Sophie. That night, Sophie couldn’t sleep because she kept on thinking about all the fun the other kids were having. Sophie was also getting madder and madder, so at 12:00A.M.shepackedherthings. Sinceeveryonewasasleep, sheeasilysneaked into her mom’s purse and stole her credit card and crept outside. Sophie ran, slept, and ate for a week. Afteraweek, sheendeduplivinginacave. Whileshewasexploringit, she found a crystal. When she picked up the crystal, a boy appeared. “Ahh!” screamed Sophie when she saw the boy. Then the boy said his name was Kevin and he was a year older than Sophie. He added that the crystal could summon a time machine because the cave they were standing in was an ancient one. He explained that the right person holding the crystal and saying “Hi, crystal” would unlock the time machine. Sophie was excited; maybe she was the right person! “Hi, crystal,” said Sophie. Mysteriously, something that looked like a photo booth appeared! It was the time machine! “Wow!” said Sophie and Kevin at the same time. They quickly went inside and decided to go to the future. They used the button to program it to take them to the year 2021. When they got there, they were amazed by the flying cars they saw. “What if we look at our future?” asked Kevin. “Sure,” said Sophie. Suddenly, behind them, they heard a “Clomp! Clomp! Clomp!” “Ahh! What is that?” screamed Kevin and Sophie at the same time. They turned and saw a monster that resembled a giant banana! “Run!” screamed Sophie. “Wait! Don’t go,” cried the monster. “What?” said Kevin in a surprised voice. “Please don’t be afraid. I am the God of the Future. I have been very lonely! You two are the first ones to ever come to the future.” “Oh!” said Sophie. “In that case, we won’t be afraid.” “Now let me show you your future.” So, Sophie watched her future. In it, she never went home and she married Kevin. She wasn’t sure she liked what she saw. “Are we allowed to change our future?” asked Sophie. “Absolutely,” said the monster. So, Sophie and Kevin both decided that they would go home. Sophie told her mom the whole story, and her mom told her how worried she had been. A few weeks later, Kevin came over to her house. Sophie and Kevin became good friends. And just like they had seen in the future, they eventually married and had two sons and two daughters. They decided that when their children were old enough, they would take them to the cave, show them the crystal, and tell them the whole crazy story of how they had met each other and the Banana God of the Future.
