You thought you knew why the Moon changes shape. Our story begins a long time ago, 582 B.C., back when wizards and witches ruled the land. The high council of the Wizard’s Tribe contained 5 rulers: Godfred the Great, Rigred the Religious, Conrules the Councilor, Merlin the Magic and Shigma the Shape Shifter. One year, Shigma called together an unexpected meeting. No one else knew what the meeting was about. At the meeting, Shigma told the council he was going to turn into something big and grand that everyone would know and see throughout the world because Shigma thought the Wizard’s Tribe was not good enough. Conrules tried to calm him down so he wouldn’t get into one of his mishaps. He had already turned himself into a dragon once so everyone would bow down to him and had ended up being hunted by the tribe for 2 weeks straight! Even though everyone said all that they could to stop him, it didn’t change Shigma’s mind. Night fell over the Wizard’s Tribe. Along with the night came a darkness that was so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. Everyone went to bed....except Shigma. He turned himself into a raccoon so he could see in the night. When he reached the altar in the center of town he changed himself back into his wizard form, climbed onto the altar and started muttering strange words under his breath. When he stopped muttering, he disappeared. But that same night at the same time that Shigma disappeared, a bright shining white ball arose in the darkness of the night. It was so bright and so astonishing that there was light at night that people came out to admire the new object in the sky. Shigma was very pleased that his plan worked. The whole world had seen him in the sky. When he tried to change back so he could be the most honored wizard in the Wizard’s Tribe all that he could do was make himself a sliver of light. To this day, when you see the moon in the sky change shape you now know that it is Shigma still trying to change back to his wizard self and be the most honored in the world. Sometimes he gets to mad that he turns red! If ever you feel like you want to be known, please, look in the sky and remember the story of Shigma and how his greed took away what he had and left him with nothing. So, be happy for what you have, for if you are greedy you might end up with nothing instead of something.
