Salem, Racine Co., July 20, 1S48 Mr. Bouth : L basten to inform you of an attempt to kidnap two men, in the town of Wheailand, Hacine Co., vvlip, whh another man, had been on and abont Englisli Prairie for some two inonths. On Monday last, whüe they were at work in a harvest (icld in the above town, tliey 'vere attacked wilh pistols and I ound by tu'o slave catchers calling tliemselves Parles and Smith, with the Sheriff of McHenry co., Illinois, Constable Hathaway and a Mr. Thrall and carried across the line into McHenry co., wben Sheriff White served a warrant upon them for felony. Wben I was informed of wbat had buen done, I startc-J for English Prairie, and wilh some 30 men weni in puisuit of the kidnappers. We overtook tbem at Woodstock, where we found them lodged in jail. The next morning it was found that not a lawyer in the place wonld act as counsel for the slave-catchers, and they sent (o Chrystal Lake wilh no beller snecess. Fimilly Mr. Busb consented to act for them, in order lo expedita the matter. It was known that Parks cJaimed one of the men as a slave; the other was free, but had probably aided the slave to escape. The counsel moved the Court to discharge the prisoners, on account of the illegality of the arrest, and they were occordingly discharged. They were irntnediately laken by the arm by Messrs. - HufFand Toles, of English Prairie, and with a crowd of prolnibly 100 persons, conducted through the street to the waggon, aml with a guard of some 40 men, brought back to Eagsh Prairie.
