Lansi:ng, Mich., Marcli 20. - The senate devoted yesterday to the consideraron in committee of the woole oL Senator Bastone's bill tj secure uniiormity of text books and provide for the publication of such books by the state. The practical effect of this bill was to prohibit the teaching of other than tbe English language in the public schools of the state. The comniiltee ellminated this feature of the bill, and it will probably pass. The house comraittee on elections reported in favor of flall, Republican, in the Ogemaw coiitest. An attempt to repeal the law making the common property of man and wife not subject to execution for the debts of either, was defeated. Lansing, Mich., March 21.- A bill was reported tothe legislatura yesterday placing the clerk of the supreme court on a saiary instead of fees, it being established that uuder the fee system he gets more than a supremo court judge. The committee appo:uted to investígate the reform school for girls at Adrián reported that the punishment inflicted was at times severt-r than discipline demanded, nd that the law reiating to the adoption f girls trom the school had been violated n the same manner aa at the Coldwater tate school. Lansinö, Mich., March 25.- The house ommittee on state affairs has agreed to eport a bül fixing prices for telegraph messages at 20 cents for ten words, and 1 ent for each additioual word.
