ColüMBUS, O., April 28,-There will be no strike of the coal miners oa May 1 to enforce the demand for the eight-hour day. That decisión was made by the national execntive board of the United Mine Workers here yesterday and the order to that effect was being sent to the local assemblies last night. To-day the official announcement was made. Secretary Patriek McBride said last night in exp'.anation of the matter that it was not done fcecanse it was found that the miners did not want it, but they found that the proprietors who would be most easily and quickly forced to comply with the demand were those who had always been friendly and considérate toward the miners. "You may say," said he, "that the eight-hour strike has been postponed pending the treat coke strike in Pennsylvania." A Conference with Gompers. A telegram from New York city says: "It was stated here yesterday tbat repreentatives of the coal operators had couferred with Samuel Gompers, president of the American Fecleration of Labor, in this city Sunday, aud that the strike of miners for eight hours, which was to take place on May l, had been averted. A reporter saw Mr. Gompers at his residence last night, and asked him whether there was any trnth in this story. Mr. Gompers seemed to be annoyed at the question, and said: 'Nothing has been done to-day, as far as I know, that will affect the demanii of the miners for eight hours on May 1. Whether or not anything will be done before then I am not in a position to say. We had a special meeting to-da, Jut I am very sorry that I can give no further information about it.' "A labor leader whom the reporter saw after leaving Mr. Gompers, said: 'I ara inclined to think that some of the operators carne to see Mr. Gompers to try and Arrange a compromiso that would exteud to the miners all over the country, and that the conference adjourned without Teaching any definite conclusión. I expected all along that there would be a conference of the heads of both sides.' "
