Rome, Apdl 24. - A magazine containing 250 tons of gunpowder, situated two and one-half miles from tbis city, exI ploded at 7 o'clock yesterday niorniug. The concussion demolished every building within t-.vo-thirds of a mile of the explosión, and did muoh damage to buildings throughout the city, the cupola of the Italian government building collapsing, and valuable Windows in the Vatican being suattered. Five are known to have been killed, and 120 injured have been taken to the different hospitals. The Popular King Humbert The authorities are not willing to believe that the explosión was an accident and will set on foot a rigid investigaticn, King Humbsrt, in this as other instances, won golden opinious by his personal and active interest in relieving the sufferers. Yesterday he gave personal attention to the Eufferers from the explosión, and cüd not retire from the sceue until assured that measures were well in hand for their relief. The pope is said to be deeply stirred over the damage to the Vatican, and to be preparing a protest against the alleged negligence of the Italian government in storing such a vast quantity of powder contiguous to Rome.
